Chapter 5 - Debts Written in Blood

Meera looked up at him, the silence between them thick with unspoken tension. The distance between them had collapsed completely. She could feel the radiating heat of his body, the faint, ragged rhythm of his breathing, and the unyielding strength in the hand cupping her face.
""I don't belong to you, Damian,"" she whispered, though she didn't pull away from his touch. ""I'm your employee. That's all we've ever been.""
""Is that what you tell yourself?"" Damian's thumb traced the line of her cheekbone, his skin rough and warm against her cool flesh. ""Every late night we spent in that office, every time you stayed until three in the morning to make sure my operations were protected... you think that was just for a paycheck?""
""It had to be,"" she said, her voice trembling slightly. ""Because if it was anything else, it meant I was losing my mind. You're a monster, Damian. People die because of decisions made in your boardroom.""
""I am a monster,"" he agreed without a shred of hesitation. ""I never claimed to be anything else. But I have never lied to you, Meera. And I have never let anyone harm you.""
Before Meera could reply, the harsh chime of Damian’s encrypted satellite phone cut through the quiet room.
Damian didn't take his eyes off her for another second before stepping back and pulling the phone from his pocket. He tapped the screen and held it to his ear. ""Speak.""
The voice on the other end was frantic, high-pitched with terror. It belonged to Marcus, Damian’s chief logistics manager at the Lake Michigan freight terminals.
""Boss! It's Marcone! They hit the Southside hub five minutes ago!"" Marcus yelled over the loud sound of automatic gunfire and blaring sirens. ""They bypassed the perimeter security! They had our clearance codes, Damian! They knew exactly where the cash vaults were!""
Damian’s expression turned to stone. ""Who gave them the codes?""
There was a horrific pause on the line, followed by a wet, choking gasp. Then, a new voice spoke through the receiver—smooth, arrogant, and mocking.
""Croft,"" said Antonio Marcone, the head of the rival syndicate. ""Your logistics manager was remarkably eager to talk once we took a blowtorch to his kneecaps. He told us everything. He told us about the offshore routing. He told us about the Cayman accounts. And he told us that all the master encryption keys are stored on a single offline cold drive.""
Damian didn't speak. His fingers tightened around the phone until the plastic groaned under the pressure.
""Here's the deal, Damian,"" Marcone continued smoothly. ""You bring the drive and your pretty little secretary to the Navy Pier storage warehouse by midnight. Hand her over, hand the money over, and maybe I’ll let you leave Chicago alive. If you're five minutes late, I start sending you your operations managers piece by piece in priority mail boxes.""
The call went dead.
Damian slowly lowered the phone. The living room was dead silent save for the crackle of the fireplace.
Meera stood up, the cherry silk dress rustling against the leather sofa. She had heard enough from the speaker to understand the catastrophic scale of the collapse. ""Marcus betrayed you?""
""Marcus is dead,"" Damian said flatly.
""Damian... the encryption drive,"" Meera breathed, realizing the immediate danger. ""It's not in the office vault. I took it with me when I left today. I put it in my purse because I didn't want it sitting in an empty building over the weekend.""
Damian turned to look at her canvas tote bag sitting on the entry table. A dark, terrifying smile crept across his lips—not of defeat, but of cold, calculating fury.
""Good,"" Damian murmured, walking toward the gun cabinet hidden behind the mahogany bookcase. ""Because Marcone thinks he's baiting a trap for an accountant and a businessman.""
May you like
He unlocked the reinforced steel cabinet, revealing rows of military-grade tactical rifles, suppressed handguns, and body armor.
""Change out of that dress, Meera,"" Damian said, pulling a combat vest from the rack. ""Tonight, we end the Marcone family once and for all.""
