Chapter 10 - The Ledger Balanced

Meera set her coffee mug on the table, her hands steady as she reached out and touched the lapel of his tailored suit jacket. The fine Italian wool was soft beneath her fingers, covering the scarred, lethal frame of a man who had proved he would burn the world to ashes before he let her fall.

""You're asking me to step out into the daylight with you,"" she said, her voice soft but laden with realization. ""If I sign this, there is no going back. I become as much of a target as you are.""

""You already are a target,"" Damian said, his hands coming up to gently cup her face, his thumbs stroking along her jawline with an exquisite, uncharacteristic gentleness. ""The difference is, now you won't be hiding in the dark. Now you will have every soldier, every politician, and every dollar in this organization standing in front of you. And you will have me.""

He leaned down, his forehead resting against hers, his breath warm against her lips. ""I spent three years watching you in that office, pretending I only valued your spreadsheets. I lied to myself every single day. I told myself you were just an asset. But when I saw you in that cherry dress... when I realized you were going to walk out of my life and give your light to someone who didn't even understand what you were... it nearly broke me.""

Meera closed her eyes, feeling the fierce, thrumming truth in his words. For three long years, she had felt the exact same gravitational pull, running from it out of fear of what loving a man like Damian Croft would do to her soul. But standing in the wreckage of the night, having fought through blood and fire, she realized that her soul hadn't been destroyed. It had been forged.

""I’m not wearing gray wool skirts anymore, Damian,"" she murmured, opening her eyes to meet his piercing, hungry gaze.

""Good,"" Damian whispered, a slow, breathtaking smile curving his lips. ""I prefer the dark cherry silk.""

He closed the final fraction of distance between them, capturing her lips in a deep, fierce, possessive kiss.

The kiss carried all the unsaid words of the past three years—the late nights over cold ledgers, the stolen glances across bloodstained mahogany desks, the terror of Navy Pier, and the wild, untamable hunger that had burned between them from the very beginning. Meera wound her arms around his neck, pulling him closer, surrendering completely to the tempest she had fought so long to resist.

When they finally broke apart, both breathless, Damian rested his hands against her hips, his eyes dark with an emotion that was fierce, protective, and unmistakably devoted.

Meera turned toward the marble table. She picked up the heavy gold fountain pen resting beside the documents. Without a second thought, she flipped to the signature page and signed her name in bold, flowing ink: Meera Finch, Managing Partner.

She capped the pen with a satisfying click and looked back at Damian.

""So, Mr. Croft,"" she said, her voice brimming with confidence, power, and a touch of wicked charm. ""What’s our first order of business?""

Damian took her hand, interlacing his scarred fingers with hers, bringing her knuckles to his lips to place a reverent kiss against her skin.

""First,"" Damian said, his eyes gleaming with triumphant warmth, ""we take our reservation back at Amelio's. Just the two of us. And this time, nobody interrupts our dinner.""

Meera smiled, stepping into his embrace as the morning sun flooded the high office, illuminating a city that now belonged to them both. The debts were settled, the rivals were gone, and the ledger was finally, perfectly balanced."
