Chapter 4 - The Safehouse Confession

The rain was coming down in violent sheets as the armored SUV cut through the deserted streets of industrial Chicago. Inside the cabin, the only sound was the rhythmic slap of the windshield wipers and the muffled hum of the engine.

Meera sat in the corner of the leather seat, wrapped in Damian’s oversized wool coat. It smelled of tobacco, cold rain, and the faint, unmistakable metallic tang of blood. Beside her, Damian leaned back, pressing a clean linen handkerchief against his split knuckles.

""We aren't going back to my apartment, are we?"" she asked, staring out the tinted window at the blurred neon signs passing by.

""Your apartment was compromised twenty minutes after you left the office,"" Damian said calmly. ""Marcone’s crew has two cars parked outside your building. If you had taken a cab home after dinner, you would be in the back of a cargo van heading toward Indiana right now.""

A chill ran down Meera’s spine. She closed her eyes, resting her forehead against the cool glass. ""How did they find out about me, Damian? I spent three years keeping my name off every single manifest, every shell registry, every public filing. To the world, I’m just an executive assistant who orders your lunch.""

""Someone inside talked,"" Damian said, his voice darkening into something lethal. ""Someone who had access to the Southside routing numbers. I’ll find out who it was before sunrise. But until then, you stay with me.""

""With you?"" She turned her head to look at him. ""Damian, being around you is what brought them to me in the first place!""

Damian didn't flinch. He lowered the handkerchief, revealing skin that was already swelling and purple. ""Being near me is dangerous, Meera. Being away from me right now is fatal. There's a difference.""

The SUV pulled through a set of heavy wrought-iron security gates into a secluded estate nestled along the wooded bluffs north of the city. High concrete walls, razor wire, and thermal cameras surrounded the perimeter. It wasn't a home; it was a fortress disguised as a modernist glass mansion.

Damian led her through the reinforced front entrance. The interior was stark, minimalist, and silent. Armed guards stationed in the foyer nodded respectfully to Damian before vanishing into the shadows of the corridors, leaving them entirely alone.

""Sit,"" Damian instructed, pointing toward a deep leather sofa in the sunken living room. He walked over to a wet bar, poured two glasses of scotch, and brought them over. He set one in front of her and sank into the armchair opposite.

Meera ignored the drink. She pulled the silk dress tighter around herself, shivering despite the warmth radiating from the gas fireplace. ""This isn't what I signed up for. When you recruited me from the audit division three years ago, you promised I would remain behind the curtain. You promised I would never be targeted.""

""I lied,"" Damian said quietly.

Meera blinked, stunned by his blunt honesty. ""What?""

Damian leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees, his intense gaze locking onto hers with an intensity that made it impossible to look away. ""I lied because I needed you. I’ve had dozens of accountants, Meera. Men with Harvard degrees, crooked lawyers who knew how to bend every state statute. Every single one of them folded the second the pressure got high. They stole, or they ran to the FBI, or they panicked and got themselves killed.""

He paused, his jaw tightening. ""Then I found you. You looked at millions of dollars of dirty money and didn't flinch. You looked at federal subpoenas and found the loopholes in an hour. You were brilliant, ruthless, and untouchable.""

""I was doing my job!"" she protested, her voice cracking.

""No,"" Damian said, his voice dropping to a raw, rough whisper. ""You weren't just doing a job. You became the only person in this godforsaken city who looked me in the eye without fear or greed. You think I watched you walk out of my office tonight in that dress because I cared about the dock schedules? You think I care whether David understands municipal bonds?""

Meera held her breath, her heart pounding fiercely against her ribs. ""Why did you follow me, Damian?""

May you like

Damian stood up, stepping across the rug until he was towering directly over her. He reached down, his thumb gently catching the edge of her jawline, brushing away a stray drop of rain that had clung to her cheek.

""Because the thought of another man touching what belongs in my life made me want to burn this whole city to the ground,"" he said.
