Chapter 9 - The Price of Treason

Dante stopped at the foot of the stairs, leaning against the archway to catch his breath. His face was bruised, and a trail of blood ran down his temple, but his eyes were alive with lethal clarity. Behind him, the staircase was silent; the strike team had been completely neutralized.
He took in the scene: Victor Vance tied to the stanchion in a pool of his own blood, Elise standing defiantly with a drawn pistol, and Argo bandaged and breathing steadily on the wooden table.
""You're quite something, Mrs. Novak,"" Dante rasped, tossing his empty shotgun aside and walking slowly toward them.
""I found the files, Dante,"" Elise said, lowering the pistol and holding up the illuminated screen. ""All of it. Marco's recording. Julian's data. Every transaction, every murder order. Victor was the one who sold them out.""
Dante’s eyes shifted slowly down toward Victor Vance. The look on the mafia boss’s face was colder than the Arctic ice. The air in the cellar dropped ten degrees.
""Victor,"" Dante said, his voice terrifyingly calm.
""Dante... please,"" Victor whined, coughing up blood, terror making his voice shrill. ""They had a gun to my family's head... they forced me... I had no choice!""
""You don't have a family, Victor,"" Dante said softly, stepping closer until the toe of his shoe touched Victor's face. ""I gave you everything. I gave you power, loyalty, and a seat at my table. And you killed my brother for thirty pieces of silver.""
Dante reached down, unholstering a small revolver from his ankle.
""Wait,"" Elise intervened, stepping between Dante and the traitor.
Dante looked at her, his eyes wild with vengeance. ""Step aside, Elise. This is family business.""
""If you shoot him down here like a dog, you prove them right,"" Elise said firmly, her voice cutting through his blind rage. ""You become the criminal they painted you to be. Aegis-Vanguard wants you to react like a mobster so they can send federal marshals to execute you. But this data? This data doesn't just destroy Victor. It destroys Sterling. It destroys Aegis-Vanguard from the top of the corporate ladder to the bottom of the senate.""
Dante stared at her, the gun trembling slightly in his grip as the raw, agonizing grief of his brother’s death battled with her cold, brilliant logic.
""Let the world see what they did,"" Elise pleaded gently, placing a hand on his arm. ""Let Marco and Julian have real justice. Not a secret burial in a basement.""
Dante closed his eyes for five long seconds. When he opened them, the manic fury was gone, replaced by the calculating, indomitable will of a true leader.
He lowered the hammer of the revolver and slipped it away.
""Call the Attorney General’s special task force,"" Dante ordered, pulling out an encrypted satellite phone and tossing it to Elise. ""Use the emergency override code on the back. Tell them Dante Castellani is handing them the biggest defense fraud and treason case in American history.""
He turned back toward the vault door. ""Is Ivy safe?""
""She's inside,"" Elise whispered, her heart swelling with profound relief.
Dante tapped softly on the vault door. ""Ivy. It’s safe now. Come out, little one.""

The heavy metal wheel turned. The vault door creaked open, and Ivy peeked out. Seeing her mother and Dante standing unharmed, she ran across the room and threw her arms around Dante’s neck. The ruthless billionaire, feared by half the continent, knelt in the bloodstained cellar and wrapped his arms around the little girl, burying his face in her hair as a solitary tear tracked through the dust on his cheek.
""Thank you,"" Dante whispered into the darkness. ""Thank you both.""
