Chapter 6 - The Uninvited Guests

The mansion descended into controlled chaos. Heavy iron shutters slammed down over the lower-level windows with concussive thuds. The Castellani security team mobilized, the metallic clatter of assault rifles echoing down the grand staircase.

""Victor, lock down the west perimeter,"" Dante ordered sharply through his radio. ""No one enters this house without my direct authorization.""

""Understood, boss,"" Victor’s voice came back, but there was an odd, strained cadence to his words that made Elise’s neck prickle with instinct.

Dante turned to Elise, grabbing a tactical medical kit from his private armory and shoving it into her hands. ""Take Ivy and Argo down to the wine cellar through the service lift. There’s a reinforced bunker behind the vault door. You do the extraction there.""

""Dante, listen to me,"" Elise urged, grabbing his forearm. ""Whoever leaked the ping didn't do it through an external satellite. My scanner was running on a closed-circuit localized bridge. The only way Aegis-Vanguard could have traced that scan within thirty minutes is if someone inside this house sent an outbound alert.""

Dante’s jaw tightened. ""Victor.""

""He was the one who insisted on shooting me in the yard,"" Elise said, her voice urgent. ""He’s been trying to put Argo down since the day the dog arrived.""

Before Dante could process the revelation, the lights in the mansion abruptly cut out. Emergency red backup lighting flickered on, painting the mahogany walls in shades of blood.

A deafening explosion rocked the lower ground floor. The concussive blast rattled the chandelier above their heads, sending dust and plaster cascading down. Shouts, gunfire, and the sharp crackle of flashbang grenades erupted from the main foyer.

""They're inside,"" Dante said, drawing a custom semi-automatic pistol from his shoulder holster. ""Go! Now!""

Elise didn't waste a second. She scooped Ivy into her arms. ""Ivy, sweetie, wake up. We're playing our quiet game, remember?""

Ivy opened her eyes, instantly sensing the terror in the air. She nodded solemnly, burying her face into Elise's shoulder. Argo was already on his feet, his ears pinned back, a deep, predatory focus taking over his posture despite his limp.

They rushed to the hidden service elevator, Dante covering their rear with calculated, lethal efficiency. As the metal gates closed, Dante looked through the bars at Elise.

""Get the data, Elise. Whatever happens... make sure Julian and Marco didn't die for nothing.""

""Stay alive, Dante,"" she whispered back.

The lift descended smoothly into the earth, cutting off the deafening sound of gunfire above. When the doors opened into the cold, vaulted brickwork of the ancient wine cellar, the smell of dust and vintage oak greeted them.

Elise led Ivy toward the heavy steel door of the vault at the far end of the cellar. But as she reached for the electronic keypad, the unmistakable sound of a gun cocking echoed from the shadows behind a stack of oak barrels.

""Step away from the vault, Mrs. Novak,"" Victor Vance said, stepping into the red emergency light. He wasn't bleeding. He wasn't running. He was holding a silenced automatic pistol aimed straight at Elise’s forehead, with a satisfied, venomous smirk spread across his face. ""I've been waiting eighteen months to clean up the last of Marco’s mess.""
