Chapter 10 - A House Becomes a Home

Six months later, the sun rose brilliantly over the rolling green hills of the Castellani estate. The suffocating gray rain that had defined Elise's arrival was entirely gone, replaced by the vibrant blooms of early summer and the warm breeze carrying the scent of fresh honeysuckle.
The downfall of Aegis-Vanguard had dominated international news for weeks. Harold Sterling and fourteen high-ranking executives were currently serving consecutive life sentences in federal supermax facilities for treason, corporate espionage, and first-degree murder. Victor Vance had traded a full confession for thirty years without parole, exposing every dirty politician and corrupt operative connected to the syndicate.
Julian Novak and Marco Castellani had been posthumously awarded the Presidential Citizens Medal for their bravery in uncovering the illegal operations. Julian's name was finally cleared, his legacy restored as a hero who gave everything to protect innocent lives.
On the manicured lawn behind the grand manor, the sounds of laughter drifted across the terrace.
Ivy, dressed in a bright yellow sundress, was sprinting across the grass, holding a wooden stick high above her head. Running alongside her—not limping, but bounding with powerful, joyful strides—was Argo.
Following a groundbreaking orthopedic surgery performed by Elise at the state veterinary hospital, Argo’s hip had been rebuilt with titanium joints. He was no longer the broken, terrifying beast locked away in a freezing yard. His coat shone like polished obsidian, his tail wagged constantly, and he never left Ivy's side for more than a few feet.
On the veranda, Elise leaned against the stone balustrade, sipping a cup of black coffee. She was no longer wearing the rough linen apron of a terrified maid. She wore an elegant cream trousersuit, her hair falling softly past her shoulders, the dark shadows beneath her eyes finally replaced by peace and purpose.
She was now the director of the Novak-Castellani Foundation, a multi-million-dollar initiative funded by Dante to rescue, rehabilitate, and retire combat and service animals across the country.
A pair of warm hands rested gently on her shoulders. She didn't flinch.
Dante leaned in beside her, dressed in a relaxed linen shirt with the sleeves rolled up, looking younger and lighter than he ever had in his life.
""The board approved the new rescue sanctuary in Vermont this morning,"" Dante said, a genuine smile curving his lips. ""Three hundred acres of protected forest. Just like you designed.""
Elise turned her head to look at him, her heart filling with a quiet, steady warmth that had seemed impossible two years ago. ""Thank you, Dante. Julian would have loved what we're building here.""
""Julian would be proud of you,"" Dante replied softly, his dark eyes softening with deep affection. ""Marco too. You saved this family, Elise. You brought light back into a house that was built on shadows.""
""We saved each other,"" she corrected gently.
Across the lawn, Ivy tripped over a mound of grass, tumbling onto the soft turf. Before Elise could even react, Argo was already there, gently nudging the little girl with his nose and licking her cheeks until Ivy burst into hysterical, ringing laughter.
""Look at them,"" Dante murmured, his hand sliding down to interlace his fingers with Elise’s. ""I don't think that dog will ever let her go.""
""Neither will we,"" Elise said, leaning her head against Dante's shoulder as they watched the girl and the dog run toward the horizon under the bright morning sun.

The suitcases she had carried through the iron gates three weeks into her nightmare were long since unpacked. She had entered this house hunting for ghosts and running from death.
Now, she was finally home."
