Chapter 5 - Shadows of Castellani

Inside Dante’s private study on the top floor of the manor, the atmosphere was thick with tension and the smell of aged whiskey. Outside, the rain continued to lash against the reinforced glass.
Ivy had been brought up by Dante’s trusted elderly housekeeper, Mrs. Gable, and was currently sleeping soundly in a plush velvet armchair by the crackling fireplace, wrapped in a cashmere blanket. Argo lay stretched out at her feet, his head resting heavily on the child's small shoes, acting as a living shield.
Dante unlocked a hidden wall safe behind a Renaissance painting, pulling out a thick, leather-bound dossier and tossing it onto the mahogany desk in front of Elise.
""Look at it,"" Dante instructed, pouring two glasses of amber liquid and pushing one toward her. ""Everything I gathered on the explosion that killed Julian. And everything on the ambush that took Marco.""
Elise opened the file with trembling fingers. Her breath hitched. Inside were crime scene photos, ballistics reports, and shipping manifests stamped with the Castellani Logistics emblem.
""They used my fleet,"" Dante said, his voice bitter and dark. ""A rogue faction within my own syndicate, backed by private military capital from Aegis-Vanguard, was moving experimental biochemical assets and unregistered surveillance tech through my shipping containers. Marco discovered the manifests. He reached out to Julian, who was the lead researcher trying to expose the human and animal testing inside the laboratory.""
""Julian never mentioned Marco’s name,"" Elise whispered, staring at a photograph of a smiling young man in tactical gear with a much younger, unscarred Argo by his side.
""Because they knew their communications were monitored,"" Dante replied, running a hand through his dark hair. ""They planned to blow the whistle together. But someone tipped off the board at Aegis-Vanguard. They orchestrated the explosion at Julian’s facility. Two weeks later, Marco was executed in an ambush designed to look like a botched arms deal. The only reason Argo survived was because Marco pushed him out of the vehicle before the missile struck.""
Tears pricked Elise’s eyes as the pieces of the puzzle violently snapped together. All this time, she had believed Dante Castellani was the monster responsible for her husband’s death. She had infiltrated this fortress expecting to find a ruthless mobster who deserved to burn. Instead, she was looking at a broken brother fighting the exact same ghost.
""Why didn't you go to the authorities?"" she asked.
""Because the authorities are on their payroll,"" Dante scoffed bitterly. ""The CEO of Aegis-Vanguard has senators in his pocket and judges on speed dial. The only way to destroy them is to find the black-box data Marco extracted before he died. He hid the encrypted drive in something they couldn't confiscate without drawing attention.""
Elise looked down at Argo sleeping by the fire. The fifteen-digit number flashed in her mind.
""The microchip,"" Elise gasped. ""It’s not just an ID tag. It’s a dual-layer flash storage unit. Julian told me once that the new military chips could store up to two terabytes of encrypted data within sub-dermal biosensors!""
Dante leaned forward, his eyes locking onto hers with ferocious intensity. ""Can you extract it?""
""I don't just know how to extract it,"" Elise said, standing up with renewed resolve. ""I'm the only person alive who can remove it without triggering the thermal fail-safe that would incinerate the drive and kill the dog. But I need surgical instruments. Real ones.""
Before Dante could answer, the security monitors on his desk flashed bright red. A silent alarm pulsed through the room.

Victor Vance’s face appeared on the intercom screen. ""Mr. Castellani, we have a breach at the eastern perimeter gate. Unmarked black SUVs. Heavy tactical gear. They’re claiming to be federal agents with an asset recovery warrant for the animal.""
Dante didn't flinch, but his eyes turned to cold ice. ""They know she scanned him. The signal pinged their network.""
