Chapter 9 - The Harbor of Peace

Six months later, the golden light of late spring bathed the coastal waters of Palermo, Sicily.
The ancient stone chapel of San Giovanni stood high on the cliffs, surrounded by blooming bougainvillea and the sparkling azure expanse of the Tyrrhenian Sea.
Inside the candlelit sanctuary, the priest concluded the sacred baptismal rite, pouring holy water over nine-month-old Leo's head.
Leo didn't cry. He giggled, his hands splashing in the stone font, turning his head with delight at the ringing church bells echoing through the rafters.
Beside the font stood Clare, wearing an elegant ivory lace dress, her hair swept up in a graceful chignon.
She held four-year-old Maya’s hand, who was wearing a matching ribbon in her hair, watching the ceremony with wide, fascinated eyes.
Dante stood beside Clare, dressed in a tailored navy suit, looking not like a feared syndicate boss, but like a man who had finally found his harbor.
Over the past six months, Dante had executed a massive, historic restructuring of the Salvatore empire.
He had completely divested from high-risk port territories, legally dismantled the illicit supply lines, and established the Salvatore Foundation for Pediatric Care, funding free auditory surgeries for thousands of underprivileged children across southern Italy.
Giancarlo Viscari was serving twenty-five years in Milan for commercial extortion.
And Richard Jensen had pleaded guilty in federal court in Columbus, sentenced to fifteen years for public corruption and fraud, his parental rights permanently terminated by an Ohio domestic relations judge.
Clare was completely free.
She had her nursing license reinstated in Rome, currently serving as the clinical director of the foundation’s newborn audiology clinic.
As the ceremony ended, the small congregation of close family and trusted friends walked out into the warm Mediterranean sunshine.
Dante carried Leo on his hip, while Maya skipped ahead along the stone pathway toward the olive groves.
"He loves the sound of the ocean," Clare said, looking at Leo as the boy pointed toward the crashing waves below the cliffs.

"He inherited his mother's love for Sicily," Dante replied gently.
He stopped at the edge of the scenic terrace, turning to face Clare.
