Chapter 2 - The Ohio Shadow

Clare pulled the blanket closer around herself, suddenly intensely aware of the danger radiating from the man standing over her.
"It isn't magic, Mr. Salvatore," Clare said, keeping her voice even despite the thumping of her heart. "His middle ear canal might be obstructed by fluid or structural inflammation. Bone conduction bypasses the eardrum entirely. When I hummed against his skull, the vibrations reached his auditory nerve through bone density."
Dante stared at her, not as a wealthy patron looking at an economy passenger, but as a drowning man looking at the only hand reaching into the water.
"You're a pediatric nurse," he stated, commanding rather than asking.
"I was," Clare replied quietly, handing the satisfied, drowsy baby back into his arms. "Until my life fell apart."
Dante took his son with an awkward reverence, cradling the warm weight against his chest. Leo didn't cry this time; he simply pressed his face into his father’s lapel and fell into a deep, peaceful sleep.
Marco stepped forward, leaning close to Dante’s ear. "Don Dante, we have thirty minutes until descent into Fiumicino. The tarmac detail is already in position."
Dante waved him off without looking away from Clare. "Where is your daughter?"
"Row twenty-eight," Clare answered, standing up to return behind the dividing curtain. "She’ll be waking up soon. Thank you for letting me help."
"Sit down, Clare," Dante ordered. The softness was gone, replaced once again by the absolute authority of a man who commanded an international empire.
"Excuse me?"
"You're running from an abusive husband named Richard," Dante said, his voice flat and analytical. "You have no money, an expired nurse's license, and an address for a third cousin in an unregulated suburb of Rome who runs a counterfeit leather workshop."
Clare froze, her blood turning to ice. "How do you know that?"
"Marco ran your passport number the second you walked through that curtain," Dante said, gesturing toward his bodyguard's tablet. "Your husband filed an emergency interstate custody warrant in Columbus twelve hours ago. He claimed you abducted your daughter during a mental breakdown."
Clare’s breath hitched in her throat, terror seizing her lungs.
"Richard is a city prosecutor," she whispered, her hands shaking violently. "He told me he would use the law to hunt me down and put me in a cage."

Dante looked down at his sleeping son, then back at Clare with eyes as dark and cold as obsidian.
"Your husband's law ends at the Atlantic coastline, Clare," Dante said. "And in Italy, nobody takes what belongs to the Salvatore family."
