Chapter 10 - The Song of the Heart

The sea breeze rustled through the olive trees, carrying the sweet fragrance of salt and orange blossoms across the stone terrace.

Dante handed Leo to Marco, who immediately carried the giggling baby over to where Maya was tossing wildflower petals on the grass.

Dante turned back to Clare, taking both of her hands in his.

"One year ago, Clare," Dante spoke, his voice deep, steady, and rich with emotion, "I was trapped in an airplane cabin, convinced that my life had destroyed everything good around me. I had lost Alessia, and I believed my son was doomed to live in an empty silence because of my sins."

Clare looked up into his dark, soulful eyes, feeling the warmth of his fingers interlaced with hers.

"And then you walked through that curtain," Dante continued softly. "You brought courage into a room where everyone else offered only fear. You taught my son how to hear the world—and you taught me how to live in the light again."

He reached into his breast pocket and pulled out a small, antique velvet box.

Inside lay a breathtaking sapphire ring, surrounded by a halo of brilliant diamonds that mirrored the sparkling Sicilian sea.

"I don't offer you a life of shadows, Clare," Dante whispered, his voice thick with devotion. "The war is over. The empire is clean. I offer you an honest name, a protected home, and a heart that will honor you and Maya for every day of my life."

He looked down at her, the most powerful man in Italy waiting with a humble, trembling hope for her answer.

"Will you marry me, Clare?"

Tears of pure, unburdened happiness spilled down Clare's cheeks.

She looked past Dante toward the grass, where Maya was laughing as she helped little Leo take his first wobbly steps across the soft clover.

Two broken lives, fleeing from different kinds of violence, had met in the dark skies above the Atlantic and built a sanctuary out of unconditional love.

"Yes, Dante," Clare choked out, throwing her arms around his neck. "A thousand times, yes."

Dante lifted her off her feet, his rich, booming laughter echoing against the ancient church walls as he kissed her beneath the boundless Mediterranean sky.

From the grass below, little Leo clapped his hands together, his bright, joyful laughter ringing clear and pure in the warm afternoon air.

The silence was gone forever.

The music had returned.

And for the very first time in their lives, they were all finally, safely home.
