Chapter 9 - The Purge of the Five Families

The grand ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was a glittering spectacle of crystal chandeliers, flowing champagne, and velvet curtains. More than three hundred high-society guests—corrupt politicians, high-ranking judges, and the heads of the five crime syndicates—mingled in their designer tuxedos and evening gowns, unaware that the balance of power in New York was shifting beneath their feet.

At nine o'clock sharp, the heavy double doors at the rear of the ballroom burst open with a resounding boom that cut the orchestra’s waltz mid-note.

Every head in the room snapped toward the entrance.

Vincent Moretti walked into the grand hall, looking immaculate in a bespoke midnight-black tuxedo, his silver-gray eyes radiating absolute authority. But he wasn't alone.

Walking beside him, her hand locked firmly around his arm, was me.

Elena had spent the morning working miracles. I wore a stunning emerald-green silk backless gown that matched the family heirloom pendant resting proudly against my chest. My dark hair was styled into an elegant chignon, my posture regal, my chin held high despite the tightly bound bandages beneath the silk. Behind us marched forty fully armed Moretti enforcers in matching black overcoats, sealing every exit and balcony in the room.

A collective gasp swept through the crowd.

At the center of the VIP terrace stood Dominic Moretti, his arm in a sling from my earlier bullet wound, surrounded by four syndicate capos. Dominic’s face drained of all color, his champagne glass shattering on the marble floor.

""Impossible..."" Dominic choked out, backing away toward the wall. ""Sterling was supposed to—""

""Commissioner Sterling has met with an unfortunate early retirement,"" Vincent announced, his deep voice carrying through the silent ballroom with chilling clarity.

Vincent raised his hand, and Marco tossed a heavy leather binder onto the central stage before the council of crime bosses. The binder fell open, revealing dozens of bank statements, encrypted offshore wire transfers, and sworn forensic affidavits detailing Dominic's treason, his murder of David Vane, and his illegal alliance with corrupt city officials.

""Dominic Moretti has broken the sacred oath of our bloodline,"" Vincent declared, turning his cold gaze upon the assembly. ""He forged our father's dead-man seal to execute an unprovoked hit on the sole surviving heir of Francesca Moretti.""

The older bosses in the crowd gasped, their eyes darting to the emerald ivy pendant shining against my gown.

""Francesca’s daughter..."" the eldest boss, Don Corrado, murmured, stepping forward with profound respect. ""The true blood of the founder.""

Vincent turned toward me, bowing his head slightly in a gesture of absolute deference that stunned every guest in the ballroom.

""Rowan Mercer is no longer an outsider,"" Vincent proclaimed, his voice echoing with finality. ""By ancient decree and rightful inheritance, she controls thirty percent of this family's empire. And as Don of New York, I hereby declare her untouchable. Any man who raises a hand against her raises a war against me.""

Dominic lunged for an enforcer's weapon in sheer panic, but before his fingers could touch the holster, three Moretti loyalists tackled him to the floor, pinning him down in front of the entire assembly.

""Take him away,"" Vincent ordered coldly, not even looking back as his brother was dragged out into the waiting shadows of justice. ""Lock him in the federal holding cell under the custody of the honest agents we contacted this morning. Let him rot in a supermax prison where he can dream about the empire he threw away.""
