Chapter 2 - The Gilded Fortress

The armored Mercedes glided through Manhattan like a predator cutting through black water. Streetlights streaked across the tinted windows in long, golden ribbons, illuminating Vincent’s impassive profile. He was on his encrypted satellite phone the entire drive across the Manhattan Bridge, issuing short, ruthless commands that set dozens of invisible men in motion across the boroughs.
""Shut down the loading docks at Pier 42,"" Vincent said into the receiver. ""Freeze the accounts under the shell corporation in Panama. If Dominic tries to move any inventory out of the warehouse in Queens, break the knees of every driver who touches a steering wheel."" He hung up and slipped the device into his coat, turning to glance at my side. ""Your rib is still bleeding internally. You’re favoring your left side every time we turn.""
""It's just a bruise,"" I lied, though every bump in the road sent shards of white-hot pain through my torso.
""My family knows violence, Rowan. Don't insult my intelligence by pretending you don't hurt,"" he said, his tone neutral but firm.
Ten minutes later, the car turned down a private cobblestone lane in the Upper East Side and descended into an underground garage beneath a limestone mansion that looked more like a fortress than a home. Steel gates slammed shut behind us with a heavy, mechanized clank that vibrated through the floorboards.
An elderly woman with stark white hair pulled into an elegant bun waited by the private elevator. She wore a tailored black dress and carried a silver basin and a folded linen towel.
""This is Elena,"" Vincent introduced her as the elevator doors sealed us in. ""She has managed this estate since my father ruled the table. She knows how to set bones, stitch bullet wounds, and keep secrets.""
""Follow me, child,"" Elena murmured, her eyes softening as she noticed the dark mark blooming beneath my jawline.
The penthouse suite on the top floor was an expanse of polished hardwood, floor-to-ceiling glass overlooking Central Park, and museum-grade art. But there were no exposed glass walls without automatic blast shutters, and every door frame was reinforced with solid titanium. It was a gilded cage designed for war.
Elena led me into a master bathroom lined in black marble. With gentle, practiced hands, she helped me lift my sweater, exposing the mottled purple-black swelling along my ribcage. She didn't gasp; she had seen far worse in this house. She applied a cool herbal paste that instantly numbed the fire under my skin, then wrapped my torso tightly with medical compression bandages.
""You're safe here, little bird,"" Elena whispered, pinning the bandage in place. ""Vincent may be the devil to his enemies, but to those under his roof, he is iron and shield. Dominic, on the other hand... Dominic is poison.""
""Why would Dominic target me?"" I asked, pulling a clean cashmere sweater over my head that Elena had laid out for me. ""I work as an assistant curator at a small historical archive. I make forty-five thousand a year. David was an accountant. None of this makes any sense.""
The door opened, and Vincent walked in carrying a crystal tumbler of water and a thick leather-bound folder. He set the water on the counter and opened the folder under the vanity light.
""David Vance wasn't an accountant,"" Vincent stated bluntly. ""His real name is David Vane. He was my father’s former personal bookkeeper who stole two million dollars from the family treasury eight years ago before disappearing into witness protection. And the reason Dominic set you up wasn't about gambling debts.""

Vincent slid a photograph across the marble counter. It showed David walking out of a bank in Jersey City three days ago, carrying a steel lockbox. Standing right beside him, shaking his hand, was a sleek, handsome man with slicked-back dark hair and a cruel, crooked smile.
""That's Dominic,"" Vincent said. ""David didn't steal your car to run away from debt. He used you as a decoy. The signature on the safe deposit box containing our family's primary Swiss account ledgers... was forged in your name.""
