Chapter 10 - The Queen of New York

Six months later, the spring sun bathed Central Park in vibrant greens and blossoms of cherry pink.

From the penthouse terrace of the Moretti estate—completely rebuilt with state-of-the-art ballistic glass and lush hanging gardens—I watched the city hum with life below. The nightmares of cheap Brooklyn dive bars, seven-dollar bank accounts, and bruised ribs had faded like morning mist, replaced by an inner strength forged in fire.

Dominic had been sentenced to three consecutive life terms in an ADX federal penitentiary, his co-conspirators in City Hall systematically arrested and replaced by uncorrupted officials.

Under my direction, the legitimate thirty percent of the Moretti holdings had been restructured entirely. We launched the Mercer Historical Foundation, pouring millions of dollars into public archives, inner-city community centers, and shelters for battered women fleeing domestic violence. The Moretti syndicate itself had been purged of all narcotics and predatory debt operations, returning to its roots as a silent, powerful guardian of local businesses and neighborhood stability.

A pair of warm hands rested gently on my shoulders.

I leaned back against Vincent's broad chest, savoring the familiar scent of cedar and clean linen. He wore a crisp white dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up, revealing the silver serpent tattoo wrapping around his forearm.

""The board approved the final charter for the community museum in Brooklyn this morning,"" Vincent murmured against my hair, his voice rich and tender. ""The ribbon-cutting ceremony is next week.""

""I never thought my degree in history would be used to manage a five-hundred-million-dollar philanthropic trust,"" I laughed softly, turning in his arms to look up into his mesmerizing gray eyes.

""You brought honor back to a family that had forgotten the meaning of the word,"" Vincent said softly. His thumb traced the smooth curve of my jawline, right where Dominic's thug had left a dark bruise all those months ago. The skin was flawless now, radiating health and quiet power.

He reached into his pocket and produced a velvet box, flipping it open. Inside sat a platinum ring set with an exquisite, flawless emerald encircled by brilliant white diamonds—a design perfectly mirroring the ivy leaf of my mother’s pendant.

""You came into my life with seven dollars, broken ribs, and nothing to lose,"" Vincent whispered, kneeling before me beneath the warm spring sky, New York sprawling beneath us like our kingdom. ""You saved my life in that library, you stood beside me in the underworld, and you taught me that strength without mercy is nothing. Rowan Mercer, will you rule this family, this city, and my life as my wife?""

Tears of pure, unblemished happiness welled in my eyes. The girl who had walked into that Brooklyn bar terrified and alone was gone forever. Standing here was a woman who had fought through hell, reclaimed her bloodline, and found an unbreakable love in the heart of darkness.

""Yes, Vincent,"" I whispered, smiling through my tears. ""A thousand times, yes.""

He slipped the ring onto my finger, rose to his feet, and pulled me into an embrace that sealed my past, my present, and our eternal future together."
