Chapter 8 - The Montreal Crossing

Forty-eight hours after the coastal battle at Bar Harbor, an unmarked medical jet chartered by Lorenzo landed at a private airfield outside Montreal, Canada. The rain that had plagued Boston and Maine had finally given way to crisp, clear autumn sunshine. Inside the secure recovery wing of a private clinic, a young woman with dark hair and striking hazel eyes sat propped up in bed, her arm wrapped in heavy surgical bandages.
The door opened softly.
Clara Valenti looked up, her breath catching in her chest. Standing in the doorway was Lorenzo, his tailored coat draped over his arm, looking exhausted but deeply at peace. Beside him, dressed in a clean, soft yellow sweater and holding a new sketchbook, was Sophie.
""Mommy!"" Sophie cried out, her small voice ringing through the hospital room like church bells on a Sunday morning.
Clara burst into uncontrollable tears as her daughter raced across the linoleum floor and threw her small arms around her mother’s neck. Clara buried her face in Sophie’s dark curls, kissing her forehead, her cheeks, weeping with the overwhelming relief that only a mother who had stared into the abyss of loss could understand.
""My baby... my sweet baby girl,"" Clara sobbed, holding Sophie against her heart. ""You found him. You remembered the lion ring.""
Lorenzo stood silently by the door, watching the reunion with a warmth expanding in his chest that he hadn't felt since his brother was alive. He stepped forward, placing Matteo’s silver knight pendant and the handwritten letter on the bedside table.
""Matteo protected you both until his last breath, Clara,"" Lorenzo said softly. ""And now, that duty belongs to me. You will never have to run again. You will never have to hide in the dark.""

Clara looked up at Lorenzo, her tear-stained eyes filled with profound gratitude. ""Matteo always said you were the strongest of them all, Lorenzo. He knew that if Sophie reached you, the nightmare would end.""
Lorenzo gently placed a hand on Clara’s uninjured shoulder. ""The syndicate as you knew it is dead. I have dismantled the criminal rackets. Victor is facing life in federal prison without parole, and the family assets have been transferred into legitimate maritime enterprises and educational foundations. It's time for all of us to live in the light.""
