Chapter 4 - The Ghost of the Shoreline

In the air-gapped terminal room beneath the wine cellar, the computer screen flared to life, casting an eerie blue glow across Lorenzo’s sharp features. He plugged the microSD card into the reader. The encryption was complex, built upon a cipher that he and Matteo had invented during their youth at military academy. Lorenzo’s fingers flew across the keyboard, entering the passcodes derived from their childhood chess matches.
The final lock clicked open, revealing hours of audio logs, high-resolution bank transfers, and scanned real estate deeds. Lorenzo opened the first video file.
The screen displayed Matteo Moretti, looking exhausted, gaunt, but fiercely determined. In the background was the very room Sophie had drawn—the gray-shingled seaside cottage with the gabled roof and the red front door.
""Lorenzo,"" Matteo’s recorded voice echoed through the speakers, making Lorenzo’s throat constrict with unyielding emotion. ""If you are watching this, it means Victor finally found me, and my little girl has found her way to you. Victor wasn't just skimming from our supply lines, Renzo; he was selling our family routes directly to the federal task force in exchange for immunity and complete control of the Boston port. He framed me for treason to cover his own paper trail. Clara and I had to vanish to keep Sophie alive.""
Matteo leaned closer to the lens, his eyes burning with intense conviction. ""The cottage is in Bar Harbor, Maine. Beneath the floorboards of the boathouse lies the complete ledger of Victor’s treason, including the signatures of every bought politician and cartel contact he uses. He thinks Clara is dead, but he is hunting Sophie because she knows where the key is hidden. Guard her, Lorenzo. She is the best part of our bloodline.""
The screen faded to black. Lorenzo stood frozen, staring at the dark monitor as tears burned behind his eyes. His brother had never betrayed him. Matteo had died an exile, a hunted man, protecting his family from a parasitic uncle who had orchestrated the entire tragedy.

A quiet knock broke the silence. Marco stood in the doorway, holding Sophie’s drawing of the coastal house. ""Boss, the girl is asking for you. She says she remembers the red door. She says the bad men came to the beach house when the fog rolled in.""
Lorenzo wiped his face, his demeanor hardening into unbreakable diamond. ""Prepare the private chopper at the Norwood airfield. We are flying north to Maine tonight. It’s time to retrieve my brother’s legacy and tear Victor’s empire down to the bedrock.""
