Chapter 5 - The Red Door in the Fog

The helicopter touched down on a desolate patch of rocky coastline just north of Bar Harbor under the cover of a dense midnight fog. The Atlantic waves crashed violently against the jagged cliffs, spraying salty mist across the weathered exterior of the cottage. Lorenzo stepped out onto the damp gravel, carrying Sophie wrapped safely inside his heavy wool trench coat. Marco and four elite security operatives formed an impenetrable diamond perimeter around them, suppressed weapons held at the low ready.

Sophie nestled her face into Lorenzo’s neck, pointing a small, pale finger toward the dark silhouette of the house. ""That's it,"" she whispered, her voice steady and clearer than it had ever been. ""The red door. Mommy told me that if the storm came, I had to take the silver horse and hide in the hollow rock by the tide pool until the helicopter came.""

""You did so well, little bird,"" Lorenzo murmured, his voice softening with profound tenderness. ""You're safe now. Nobody is ever going to hurt you again.""

They entered the cottage. The air inside smelled of salt, old pine, and dried lavender. It was frozen in time; half-drunk mugs of tea sat petrified on the wooden kitchen counter, and overturned chairs bore witness to the desperate struggle that had taken place weeks prior when Victor’s hit squad had raided the sanctuary. Sophie’s mother had bought her daughter precious time to escape into the coastal woods, ultimately leading the terrified child on an odyssey that ended on Lorenzo’s rain-soaked pavement in Boston.

Lorenzo directed his men to the boathouse at the water’s edge. Beneath the rotting oak floorboards, precisely where Matteo’s recording had indicated, they unearthed a heavy, watertight military footlocker. Lorenzo pried open the latches. Inside lay stacks of encrypted drive backups, original financial ledgers detailing thirty years of Victor’s illicit kickbacks, and an envelope addressed in Matteo’s distinct handwriting: For Lorenzo and Clara.

Lorenzo opened the envelope with trembling fingers. Inside was a legal birth certificate naming Sophie Francesca Moretti, officially declaring Lorenzo as her sole legal godfather and designated guardian in the event of parental death. Alongside it was a recent medical dossier from a private clinic in Montreal, detailing emergency care for a woman named Clara Valenti-Moretti, currently recovering from gunshot trauma under an assumed identity.

Lorenzo’s heart skipped a beat. ""Clara is alive,"" he gasped to Marco. ""Victor’s assassins didn't finish the job. She survived and fled across the Canadian border.""

Suddenly, the night shattered. A flare erupted over the coastline, bathing the rocky beach in harsh, blinding crimson light. From the dark treeline emerged headlights, followed by the deafening crack of high-caliber rifle fire striking the boathouse walls.
