Chapter 10 - The Knight’s Move

On Sophie’s eighth birthday, the gardens of the Beacon Hill estate were filled with dozens of neighborhood children, colorful balloons, and the lively melodies of an acoustic jazz quartet. A giant bounce house stood where armed sentries had once stood guard, and laughter replaced the cold silence that had dominated Lorenzo’s life for over a decade.
Toward the end of the afternoon, as the sun began to cast a warm golden amber across the Boston skyline, Sophie ran up to Lorenzo. She pulled him by the hand toward a quiet stone bench beneath the blooming wisteria arbor, away from the bustling party.
On the small granite table sat an antique wooden chessboard.
""Play with me, Uncle Renzo,"" Sophie beamed, setting the polished carved pieces onto their designated squares with practiced precision.
Lorenzo sat across from her, his heart swelling with an emotion so deep, so pure, that it felt like an awakening. He watched her small, capable hands move the white pawns forward. When it came time to develop her pieces, Sophie reached out and took hold of the silver knight.
She lifted the piece, moving it two squares forward and one square to the side, landing it squarely in the center of the board with a satisfying, authoritative snap.
""The knight moves in an L, Uncle Renzo. Never straight,"" Sophie recited with a bright, knowing twinkle in her hazel eyes. ""Because sometimes, you have to leap over the obstacles to protect the king.""
Lorenzo chuckled, a genuine, hearty sound that surprised even himself. ""Who taught you that, little bird?""
Sophie touched the pendant hanging around her neck, then reached across the board and wrapped her small, warm fingers around Lorenzo’s hand.
""My father taught me before he went to sleep,"" she said softly, her eyes brimming with love and complete peace. ""And my other dad made sure I never forgot it.""

Lorenzo looked at the little girl who had walked barefoot into his rain-swept world, an amnesiac orphan who had asked him if he was her father. She had not only survived the storm; she had saved his soul from the darkness of a violent empire. He smiled, leaning forward to gently kiss her forehead.
""Checkmate, Sophie,"" Lorenzo whispered, his voice thick with unbridled joy. ""We won the game."""
