Chapter 8 - The Price of Penance

The street fell completely silent, save for the steady rhythm of rain drumming against the bakery awning.

Sophie stood motionless by the door, watching her estranged husband.

Matteo lowered his weapon, clicking the safety back into place. For the first time in the nine years she had known him, he looked completely stripped of his armor. His expensive coat was soaked, his chest heaving, his hands trembling as the adrenaline ebbed away.

He didn't advance on her. He stayed ten feet back, giving her space, his head bowed slightly in genuine humility.

""Are you hurt?"" he asked, his voice shaking with a vulnerability that tore at her chest despite her anger.

""I'm fine,"" Sophie answered quietly. ""You shouldn't have come, Matteo. You shot the son of a New York boss on a public street. You just invited a catastrophic war onto your head.""

""I don't care,"" Matteo said. He looked up, his dark eyes brimming with unshed tears. ""Let the war come. Let the empire burn. I spent nine years protecting concrete, shipping crates, and politicians who wouldn't piss on me if I was on fire. I guarded everything that didn't matter, and I let the only person who truly loved me bleed to death in plain sight.""

Sophie looked away, her jaw tight as she fought back the sudden prick of tears behind her eyes. ""Words are easy, Matteo. You were ready to burn the world for me tonight, but for nine years you couldn't even tell your mother to say 'thank you' when I baked her cake.""

The truth struck him harder than any bullet ever could. He closed his eyes, taking a shuddering breath.

""You're right,"" he whispered. ""You are completely right. I was a coward in my own house. I let my mother and Isabella poison everything because I thought peace meant avoiding conflict at home. But peace without you isn't peace, Sophie. It's just a tomb.""

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a thick envelope of legal documents. He stepped forward and placed it gently on a small bistro table beneath the awning, keeping his distance.

""What is that?"" she asked.

""Divorce papers,"" Matteo said, his voice cracking. ""Signed by me. No conditions. No contests. You keep all the harbor properties, the commercial trusts, the Hawthorne assets, and half of my personal legitimate estate. You don't have to fight my lawyers. You don't have to see me ever again.""

Sophie stared at the white envelope resting on the damp table.

""Why?"" she breathed.

""Because love isn't a debt you owe me for keeping you safe,"" Matteo said softly, the rain dripping from his dark hair down his cheek. ""You spent nine years giving me everything without asking for a single receipt. The least I can do is give you your freedom without making you pay for it.""

He stepped back into the rain, turned on his heel, and began walking down the dark street toward his car, alone in the pouring deluge.
