Chapter 5 - The Public Humiliation

The annual Autumn Gala at the Boston Symphony Hall was the premier social event of the year. For the Romano family, it was their annual public declaration of legitimacy. Every mayor, city councilor, and high-society patron attended.

Victoria Romano had spent weeks planning her entrance. She arrived flanked by Isabella and two distant cousins, determined to prove that the rumors circulating through the elite social circles were completely baseless.

""Hold your head up, Isabella,"" Victoria hissed under her breath as they ascended the carpeted steps under the flash of society photographers. ""If anyone asks about Sophie, you tell them she had a private family emergency in New Hampshire. We will not let low-born gossip ruin our standing.""

Victoria adjusted her velvet stole, ensuring her forty-eight-thousand-dollar diamond necklace caught the interior chandeliers. She wanted everyone to see the devotion of her children.

Inside the ballroom, chamber music drifted across the crowd of five hundred aristocrats, politicians, and business magnates. Victoria headed straight toward Mrs. Eleanor Vance, the undisputed queen of Boston society and chairwoman of the historical preservation board.

""Eleanor, darling!"" Victoria called out with an affectionate smile. ""You look radiant tonight.""

Eleanor Vance turned. Her smile was as cold as dry ice. Beside her stood three other prominent society matrons who immediately turned their backs.

""Victoria,"" Eleanor said flatly. ""I see you're still wearing that necklace.""

Victoria's smile stiffened. ""Why, yes. A gift from my dear Isabella. The girl has such refined taste.""

A soft, cutting laugh broke out from behind them.

""Is that what Isabella told you?""

Victoria spun around. Sophie was standing among the central VIP circle, surrounded by the city's top philanthropic board members and the state attorney general. Sophie looked breathtaking in a floor-length emerald green satin gown, her shoulders bare, wearing a simple yet priceless emerald pendant that had belonged to the Hawthorne estate for three generations.

Next to Sophie stood Arthur Vance, Eleanor's husband and the most influential private banker in New England.

""Sophie, dear,"" Eleanor Vance said warmly, stepping directly past Victoria to take Sophie's hands. ""We were just reviewing the endowment you established for the children's wing at Mass General. Five million dollars! Truly, your late mother would be so immensely proud of the grace you bring to our city.""

Victoria's jaw dropped. ""Endowment? Sophie?""

Isabella stepped forward, her face flushed with defensive rage. ""Sophie is my brother's wife! She doesn't have the authority to speak for high society, Mrs. Vance! She’s just a former bakery worker trying to cause drama because she’s jealous of our family!""

The entire quadrant of the ballroom fell dead silent.

Eleanor Vance looked at Isabella as though she had found a cockroach on her silver plate. ""Young lady, you are speaking to the sole living heir of the Hawthorne Foundation. The bakery she owned was an artisanal passion project she funded herself. Meanwhile, your family’s business accounts are currently under forensic review by three major lending institutions after Sophie withdrew her trust's underwriting guarantees this morning.""

Victoria felt the floor sway beneath her heels. ""Underwriting... guarantees?""

""Did you really think,"" Sophie said, stepping forward, her voice soft but carrying with total authority, ""that the banks approved Matteo's commercial loans because of your family name? Your family name is poison on Wall Street. I personally co-signed every credit line Matteo received for the past six years. Without my signature, the Romano empire is thirty million dollars in unsecured debt.""

The whispers erupted instantly across the room. High-society ladies covered their mouths with lace-trimmed fans. Businessmen hurriedly checked their phones, already calling their brokers to cut ties with the Romanos before the collapse spread.

Victoria looked at Isabella, then at the glittering diamonds around her own neck. The realization of what she had thrown away hit her with the force of an avalanche. She had treated an empress like a scullery maid, and in doing so, had written her own family's social obituary.
