Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Coup

Forty-eight hours after Sophie's departure, the Romano organization faced its worst financial crisis in a decade.

Matteo sat at the head of the boardroom table on the top floor of their downtown corporate offices. His dark hair was disheveled, deep purple rings circled his eyes, and his five o'clock shadow was growing into a rough beard. Across from him sat his top lieutenants, his cousin Anthony, and three of his most influential financial advisors.

""What do you mean the Hanover logistics leases have been revoked?"" Matteo slammed his palm against the table, rattling the coffee mugs.

His chief financial officer, a graying man named Raymond, wiped sweat from his brow. ""The landlord invoked the morality clause in the commercial lease agreement, Matteo. Section 14-B states that any association with federal investigations or illicit racketeering permits immediate unilateral termination. We have seventy-two hours to clear out three major transit hubs.""

""Who bought the debt?"" Matteo snarled. ""Find out who owns the property holding company and pay them double the penalty.""

""We can't,"" Raymond said, swallowing hard. ""The holding company is Aegis Harbor Capital. It was restructured yesterday morning. We requested an emergency meeting with the managing trustee, and they agreed to send their representative here today.""

The heavy oak doors of the boardroom clicked open.

Matteo turned, ready to unleash the ruthless intimidation that had kept rival syndicates in line for fifteen years.

The words died in his throat.

Walking into the room was Sophie.

She wore an impeccably tailored cream blazer over a silk charcoal blouse, her hair swept up in an elegant French twist. She wore no jewelry except for a single antique gold signet ring on her index finger—the Hawthorne crest. Her wedding band was noticeably absent. Flanking her were two of Boston's most ferocious corporate litigators.

""Sophie,"" Matteo breathed, taking a half-step out of his chair.

She didn't glance at his face. She pulled out the chair at the opposite end of the twenty-foot table and sat down with effortless poise. Her attorneys placed three leather-bound binders in front of her.

""Good morning, gentlemen,"" Sophie said, her tone cool, smooth, and utterly professional. ""Let's make this brief. As the majority shareholder and sole managing trustee of Aegis Harbor Capital, I am terminating all commercial ties with Romano Enterprises.""

Anthony gasped. ""Sophie! You can't do this! We’re family!""

Sophie finally shifted her gaze, looking directly at Anthony. Her expression was completely devoid of warmth. ""Family, Anthony? Is that what we were on October 17 when you toasted Victoria and complimented Isabella on the Swiss watch I paid eight thousand dollars for while you ignored me standing by the kitchen door?""

Anthony turned crimson, his mouth opening and closing like a landed fish.

""Sophie, please,"" Matteo said, his voice raw, completely ignoring the stunned looks of his executives. ""Come into my office. Let's talk about this in private. This isn't you.""

""This is exactly me, Matteo,"" she replied, locking eyes with him across the long expanse of mahogany. ""You spent nine years believing I was a meek little stray you plucked off the street because it made your ego feel massive to be my savior. You wanted a quiet wife who took the blows from your venomous mother and spoiled sister so you wouldn't have to deal with domestic friction after your long days of playing warlord.""

She opened the first binder.

""The leases for Hanover, the South Boston storage units, and the Atlantic wharf docks are cancelled. You will vacate by Friday at midnight. If one crate of Romano property remains, my security contractors will seize it and turn it directly over to the United States Marshal Service.""

May you like

""You're dismantling my operations,"" Matteo said, stunned not by the financial blow, but by the cold resolve in her eyes. The woman who used to pack extra honey in his tea when he coughed was looking at him like he was an insect on a windowpane.

""No, Matteo,"" Sophie said, standing up smoothly and smoothing down her blazer. ""I'm not dismantling your operations. I'm simply taking back everything I built for you while you were too busy looking down to notice.""
