Chapter 7 - The Cornered Wolf

Leo Moretti had never understood why his father feared the Boston territory. To him, the Romanos were soft—a glorified suburban family trying to play dress-up in legitimate corporate suits while their patriarch wallowed in domestic drama.
On a rainy Thursday evening, Sophie walked out of Bellamy's Bakery. She had spent the entire afternoon kneading sourdough bread, returning to the simple, grounding craft that had always kept her anchored during life's greatest storms. The sweet scent of yeast, vanilla, and cinnamon clung to her coat as she locked the shop's front door with her brass key.
Her two private bodyguards stepped toward her from the curb.
Before they could reach her, two black SUVs careened around the corner, screeching to a halt against the curb. Four armed men jumped out with silenced submachine guns.
In a matter of seconds, Sophie's guards were tackled to the wet pavement and disarmed. A tall, sharply dressed man with slicked-back hair and a cruel grin stepped out of the lead SUV.
""Mrs. Romano,"" Leo Moretti drawled, adjusting his silk tie. ""Or should I say, Miss Hawthorne? You've certainly made quite a splash on the evening news.""
Sophie didn't scream. She didn't drop her purse. She stood beneath the green awning of Bellamy’s, her gaze unwavering. ""Leo Moretti. You're four hundred miles away from your father's playground. Did he give you permission to come up here and get yourself killed?""
Leo chuckled, taking a step closer. ""Feisty. I like that. Your ex-husband is finished, sweetheart. His supply lines are broken, his capos are jumping ship, and his family is falling apart at the seams. But you... you have the commercial deeds to the entire harbor. My father wants to offer you a very lucrative partnership. You sign the maritime transit contracts over to the Moretti family, and we guarantee your safety from whatever desperate stunt Matteo pulls next.""
""And if I refuse?"" Sophie asked smoothly.
Leo’s smile turned razor-sharp. ""Then we take you to New York as a guest. And I don't think Matteo Romano has the firepower left to come get you.""
A low, menacing click echoed from the dark alleyway beside the bakery.
""He doesn't need to come to New York, Leo,"" a cold voice rasped from the shadows. ""He's already standing behind you.""
Leo spun around, his hand darting toward his shoulder holster.
Crack!
A single gunshot shattered the quiet night. The weapon flew from Leo's hand as a bullet clipped his wrist with pinpoint precision. Leo screamed, clutching his bleeding arm and stumbling into the side of the SUV.
Matteo stepped out of the alley into the streetlamp's glow. He wore no body armor, no security detail behind him. He held a customized black automatic pistol, his eyes burning with an unhinged, feral fury that made Moretti's seasoned hitmen freeze in their tracks.
""Drop your weapons,"" Matteo said, his voice terrifyingly calm. ""Or the next round goes between Leo's eyes.""
Moretti’s men looked at their writhing boss, then at Matteo’s dead-eyed stare. One by one, their heavy guns clattered onto the wet asphalt.
""You're crazy, Romano!"" Leo gasped, gritting his teeth in agony. ""My father will exterminate your entire bloodline for this!""
""Tell your father,"" Matteo said, taking three slow steps forward and pressing the smoking barrel of his gun directly against Leo's forehead, ""that Boston is closed. And if your family ever sets foot on this street, breathes the same air as my wife, or casts a shadow anywhere near this bakery, I won't just kill you. I will dismantle everything your father spent fifty years building, brick by bloody brick.""

He pulled the gun back and kicked Leo toward the open SUV door. ""Get out of my city.""
The New York crew dragged their wounded boss into the vehicle, reversed wildly into the street, and sped off into the rainy night.
