Chapter 9 - Rewriting the Will

A month after the surgery, the library of the Cole estate was transformed.
The heavy, suffocating velvet curtains had been replaced with sheer linen that let the golden autumn sunlight flood across the mahogany shelves. The scent of Serena’s heavy perfume was entirely gone, replaced by the crisp aroma of sea salt, fresh coffee, and the lavender lotion Addie favored.
Addie sat on the leather sofa, a soft cashmere blanket over her legs, watching as Declan sat at his desk. But this time, there was no deception. No false weakness. No predatory lawyers waiting to strip his bones.
Across from him sat Thomas Albright, Declan’s oldest and most honorable legal counsel, a man who had served the family for forty years.
""Everything is drafted according to your exact specifications, Declan,"" Thomas said, adjusting his spectacles and sliding a crisp, newly bound document across the desk. ""The irrevocable trust is established. Fifty percent of Cole Maritime’s non-voting shares are transferred immediately to an educational and developmental fund in the name of Calliope Reyes Cole.""
Declan looked at the name on the parchment. Calliope Reyes Cole.
""And the remaining estate?"" Declan asked.
""In the event of your death, full executive authority and lifetime stewardship of the residential properties, shipping terminals, and liquid assets transfer directly to Adelaide Reyes, with guardianship provisions that ensure Callie's heritage cannot be challenged by any secondary claimants or board members.""
Declan picked up the gold-nibbed pen. This time, his hand did not shake. With three swift, decisive strokes, he signed his name across the bottom of each page, sealing the future of his empire not in the hands of a treacherous partner, but in the hands of the woman and child who had loved him when he was nothing more than a bleeding runaway named Del.
Thomas gathered the papers, bowed respectfully to Addie, and quietly left the room.
Declan capped the pen and leaned back in his leather chair. He looked across the room at Addie, who was watching him with wide, overwhelmed eyes.
""That's too much, Declan,"" she said softly. ""I never asked for your money. I only wanted her to be safe.""
""Money is just armor, Addie,"" Declan said, rising from his desk and walking over to sit beside her on the sofa. ""I spent twenty years building armor because I thought the whole world was trying to tear me apart. But armor can't keep you warm at night. It just keeps you cold.""
He reached out and gently tucked a stray lock of dark hair behind her ear. Addie didn't pull away. Her breath hitched slightly as his fingers brushed her cheek.

""I don't want to live in an empty fortress anymore,"" Declan murmured. ""Stay here. Not as my maid. Not as an employee. Stay here as my family.""
Tears welled in Addie’s eyes, but this time they were tears of profound relief. She leaned her head against his broad shoulder, feeling the steady, powerful beat of his heart—a heart that was whole, strong, and completely hers.
