Chapter 7 - The Newport Marina

Rain lashed the docks of the Newport Yacht Club, turning the wooden piers into slick, black ribbons jutting into the roaring Atlantic. The yacht Sea Empress, a ninety-foot luxury cruiser chartered under an offshore shell company, hummed with its twin diesel engines idling, ready to cast off.

Inside the opulent main cabin, Serena Ward paced nervously, holding a glass of Scotch in one hand and her encrypted satellite phone in the other. Her designer luggage was stacked neatly near the hatch. Every few seconds, she checked the gold Cartier watch on her wrist.

""Come on, Julian,"" she muttered under her breath, her nails digging into her palms. ""Call me. Tell me it's done.""

The heavy sliding glass door of the salon groaned and slid open.

Serena turned sharply, a triumphant smile already forming on her lips. ""Julian? Did you get the documents—""

The words died in her throat.

Declan Cole stepped into the cabin.

He was soaked from the downpour, his dark overcoat dripping water onto the pristine teak floor. His hair was slicked back, his jaw shadowed with dark stubble, his eyes burning with an icy, merciless clarity. Behind him stood two of his most trusted enforcers, blocking the exit to the deck.

Serena’s glass slipped from her fingers, shattering on the wood, amber liquid splashing across her expensive leather boots.

""Declan..."" she gasped, stumbling backward until her spine hit the bar counter. ""You... how are you...""

""I told you, Serena,"" Declan said, his voice cutting through the thrum of the diesel engines. ""I don't have cancer. But you have a terminal case of ambition.""

""Listen to me!"" Serena screamed, her hands coming up in a desperate, pleading gesture. ""Julian forced me! He threatened my family! He told me if I didn't get your power of attorney, he would kill me! I did it to protect us, Declan! I was going to use his money to find you the best doctors in Switzerland!""

Declan walked forward, his boots leaving wet, deliberate tracks on the floor. He stopped three feet away from her, towering over her trembling form.

""You sat in my library and looked at a ten-year-old child who had nothing, and you called her street trash,"" Declan whispered, each syllable striking like a hammer. ""You conspired to put me in a medically induced coma so you could carve up my wife's legacy with a crooked lawyer.""

""Declan, please!"" she sobbed, sinking to her knees, grasping at the hem of his wet coat just as she had done on the rug in his library. ""I loved you! I really loved you!""

Declan pulled his coat from her grasp, stepping back with utter disgust.

""You loved the throne, Serena. But you forgot that the throne belongs to a king who built it with his bare hands."" He turned toward the enforcers. ""Hand her over to the federal agents waiting on the pier. Every wiretap, every offshore account, and every text message between her and Vance has already been delivered to the United States Attorney’s office. She will spend the next twenty-five years in a federal penitentiary for attempted murder and corporate espionage.""

As the guards dragged Serena, wailing and kicking, into the freezing rain, Declan stood alone on the deck of the yacht, watching the dark waves crash against the seawall.

For the first time in ten years, the ghost of Margaret felt at peace. And for the first time in his life, Declan had something worth living for that didn't involve blood or steel.
