Chapter 5 - The Snake's Last Strike

The transition within the Cole estate was instantaneous and ruthless. Within twenty-four hours, the master suite on the second floor—once reserved for Serena’s elaborate wardrobe—was cleared out completely, transformed into a comfortable recovery suite for Addie. Specialists arrived in private helicopters, running full compatibility panels, stabilizing her condition with world-class care that her maid’s insurance could never have touched.

For Callie, the estate transformed from a forbidden labyrinth into a kingdom of wonders. Declan took her through the library, showing her secret compartments, ancient nautical maps, and the sprawling gardens overlooking the Atlantic. For the first time in his life, the vast emptiness of the mansion felt inhabited.

Yet, a wounded snake does not simply slither away.

In the west salon, Bennett Cross had surrendered his credentials and files under the terrifying scrutiny of Declan’s forensic accountants. But Serena Ward had connections that extended beyond high-end society galas. Before her phone had been confiscated, she had managed to send a single encrypted message to Julian Vance—a rival freight operator who had spent a decade trying to break Declan’s monopoly over the Boston-to-New York shipping routes.

Julian Vance was a man who did not care about legal documents. He cared about leverage.

Three days after the confrontation in the library, as dusk settled over the rocky cliffs of Newport, the estate’s secondary power grid abruptly failed. The perimeter lights flickered and died, plunging the vast grounds into an eerie, oceanic gloom.

Declan was sitting in the conservatory, teaching Callie how to play chess on a hand-carved marble board, when the red emergency beacon on his radio flared to life.

""Boss, we have a breach at the southern gate,"" Marcus’s voice crackled through the speaker, breathless and tense. ""Two unmarked vans. They knocked out the cameras with an EMP jammer. They aren't corporate lawyers, Declan. These are Vance’s contract hitters from South Boston.""

Declan didn't flinch. His training, honed through decades of violent survival, kicked in like clockwork. He slid the black chess king into his pocket, his face hardening into stone.

""Take Callie to the panic room behind the wine cellar,"" Declan instructed Addie, who had rushed into the conservatory wrapped in a thick wool cardigan.

""Declan, what's happening?"" Addie’s face was pale, terror returning to her eyes.

""The test isn't over,"" Declan said coldly, reaching into the underside of the mahogany side table and pulling out a heavy, matte-black Colt .45. ""Serena sold my location to Julian Vance. They think I'm a dying man surrounded by divided guards.""

He knelt before Callie, placing a gentle hand on her shoulder. ""Remember what you told me, little bird? You told me not to sign because someone was going to hurt me.""

Callie nodded, her lower lip trembling, but she held his gaze without crying.

May you like

""Now I'm going to make sure no one ever hurts you or your mother again,"" Declan said. ""Go with Mom. Don't come out until I open the door myself.""

He stood up, cocked the slide of the pistol with a crisp, lethal snap, and stepped out into the darkened corridor.
