Chapter 8 - The Price of Redemption

By sunset, the grand terrace overlooking the manicured gardens was bathed in warm amber light. Elena Hayes stood nervously near the stone balustrade, holding a warm cup of chamomile tea, her eyes constantly darting toward the garden paths where Lily was chasing a butterfly through the blooming hydrangeas.
Dante stepped out onto the terrace, holding a leather-bound portfolio. He wore no weapons, no formal suit—just a simple cashmere sweater and slacks, looking more like an ordinary father than the most feared criminal boss in the Midwest.
"Elena," he greeted gently, leaning against the railing next to her.
"Mr. Moretti," she whispered, still unable to shake the instinctual fear that had ruled her life for the past year. "Are... are we in danger? Carlo's men?"
"Carlo Rossi and his entire crew are in federal custody," Dante assured her, his tone warm and steady. "They will spend the rest of their natural lives in maximum security. The threat is gone. Completely."
Elena let out a ragged breath, tears spilling over her eyelashes. She buried her face in her hands, the suffocating terror of eleven months finally releasing its grip on her soul. "We have nothing left, Mr. Moretti. Evan’s bank accounts were seized, our house was foreclosed... I’ve been living out of garbage bags in the servant quarters just to keep Lily fed."
Dante opened the leather portfolio and laid it on the stone table between them. "That ends today. Evan didn't just save my life; he saved everything my family has built for three generations. This is the deed to an estate in Lake Forest. It is fully staffed, fully secure, and deeded entirely in your name."
Elena gasped, staring at the legal papers. "I... I can't accept this. This is millions of dollars—"

"There is also a twenty-million-dollar trust established for Lily’s education and future," Dante continued, cutting her off with a gentle shake of his head. "And from this day forward, she is under the permanent protection of the Moretti name. Nobody will ever touch your family again. You have my word as a man who owes your husband his life."
Elena looked toward the garden, where Lily was laughing openly, her blond braid bouncing in the golden afternoon breeze. For the first time since her husband’s disappearance, a genuine smile touched Elena's lips.
