Chapter 1 - The Ghost in the Frame

The silence inside the underground bunker carried the cold weight of a freshly opened tomb. Dante Moretti did not move, his eyes fixed on the center monitor where the cleaner with the shuddering cart pushed through the hallway once more. The digital timestamp flickered—4:11:24, then jumped, then rewound. It was a digital loop, seamless and surgical, designed to fool anyone who wasn't staring with the unblinking curiosity of a seven-year-old child.

Marcus Reed held the diagnostic tablet, his knuckles whitening against the rubberized grip. "The access originated from within the local server hub," Marcus whispered, his voice cracking against the subterranean air. "Not an outside hack, boss. Somebody plugged a flash bypass directly into the junction box behind the cellar bar."

Dante looked down at Lily Hayes. Her fingers remained clamped around the brass pocket watch with its fractured crystal. The name Hayes was not just an employee surname inside the Moretti organization; it was a scar. Evan Hayes had been Dante’s lead systems architect, an ordinary man who kept the books, the feeds, and the silent bank transfers running smoothly. Eleven months ago, Evan had been found at the bottom of the Chicago River alongside an offshore ledger detailing millions drained from the family's shipping lines. Dante had signed the execution order himself based on cold, irrefutable surveillance evidence provided by his inner circle.

"Lily," Dante said softly, kneeling down until his broad shoulders dropped beneath her eye level. The predatory stillness that made fully grown men tremble vanished from his face. "Where did you get that watch?"

"My daddy gave it to me before he had to go away," she answered, her voice trembling slightly under the gaze of the towering boss. "He said when people want to steal something big, they don't take money first. They steal the seconds. He told me to watch the secondhand. If it jumps backward, somebody is telling a story that isn't true."

Marcus drew in a sharp breath. "Dante... Evan built this security architecture from scratch. If he left her with that warning, he didn't just know he was being set up—he knew the exact exploit they were going to use."

Dante stood up slowly, a terrifying calm settling over his features. The girl’s mother, Elena Hayes, worked twelve-hour shifts cleaning the estate’s east guest house, living in perpetual terror of the name Moretti ever since her husband’s body was recovered. She had hidden her daughter in the servant quarters, terrified that Dante’s vengeance would extend to the child. Yet here was the girl, seated on Dante’s leather throne, unraveling a year of blood-soaked certainty with a cracked antique watch.

"Pull the archived footage from the night Evan died," Dante commanded, his voice deadly low. "Every angle. Every corridor. And do not alert my council. If a single soul finds out Lily is in this room, you will answer to me personally."
