Chapter 2 - The Loop That Killed an Innocent

The server drives spun up with a high-pitched whine that cut through the basement chill. Marcus’s fingers flew across the mechanical keyboard, digging deep into the encrypted vaults containing the footage from November fourteenth of the previous year—the night Evan Hayes supposedly slipped into the estate's private treasury, loaded thirty million dollars in bearer bonds, and fled toward the docks.

"Here it is," Marcus muttered, dragging the raw feed onto the primary wall displays. "Camera four, east vault corridor. 11:42 p.m."

Dante leaned against the console, his gaze locked on the monochrome playback. On the screen, a tall figure in a hooded canvas coat walked down the corridor, carrying Evan’s distinctive leather satchel. The man had used Evan’s keycard, entered Evan’s personal biometric code, and stared directly into the lens for a brief fraction of a second before vanishing into the blind spot outside the courtyard. It was the footage that had convinced Dante without a shadow of a doubt that his trusted friend had betrayed him.

Lily shifted in the oversized chair, squinting at the screen. She reached out and touched the glass directly over the man’s shadow. "That’s not Daddy," she whispered.

Dante’s jaw tightened. "Lily, how can you know that? He’s wearing your father’s coat."

"Daddy’s right shoulder was hurt when we fell off the sled in winter," Lily said plainly, tapping her own left collarbone to demonstrate. "When he walked fast, he never swung his right arm. That man on the TV is swinging both arms like a soldier. And look at the clock, Mr. Dante. The light on the wall flickers twice before the door even opens."

Marcus froze. He isolated the corridor light fixture in the top left corner of the frame. He zoomed in five hundred percent and ran the pixel variance filter. A cold bead of sweat tracked down his temple.

"She’s right," Marcus said, his voice hollow with shock. "The shadow cast by the emergency exit sign repeats a three-frame loop every four seconds. It isn't a live feed at all. Someone pre-recorded the corridor days earlier, layered Evan’s jacket onto a body double, and patched it directly into the master archive during an unscheduled maintenance window."

Dante felt the floor drop out from beneath him. For eleven months, he had lived with the bitter satisfaction of an empire defended, believing he had ruthlessly punished a traitor. But the man he had sent to the river had never touched those bonds. Evan had been hunted down and silenced because he had discovered the backdoor—and whoever had planted that false evidence was currently sitting at Dante’s family dinner table, laughing in his face.

"Marcus," Dante said, his voice dropping an octave into chilling territory. "Who authorized the server maintenance the night Evan was taken?"

Marcus pulled up the ledger. "Carlo Rossi. Your second-in-command."
