Chapter 7 - The True Ledger

The afternoon brought clear skies over Lake Michigan, the sunlight reflecting off the limestone exterior of the Moretti estate. Inside the great study, Dante sat behind his desk, surrounded by stacks of recovered ledgers, land titles, and financial bonds. The immediate threat of Carlo’s coup had been completely neutralized within eight hours, but the heavy weight inside Dante’s chest had not lifted.
A gentle knock sounded on the heavy oak door. Marcus stepped in, holding a thin manila envelope sealed with red wax. "Boss, we found this inside Evan’s private lockbox at the downtown depository. His safety deposit key was hidden inside the lining of Lily's pocket watch."
Dante took the envelope, breaking the seal with a pocket knife. Inside was a handwritten letter addressed to him, dated three days before Evan’s murder.
Dante, the letter read.
If you are reading this, Carlo has already pulled the trigger, and my daughter is growing up without a father. I knew three weeks ago that Carlo was siphoning funds, but when I confronted him, he showed me pictures of Lily walking to school. He told me if I went to you, he would ensure she never made it to the second grade.
I couldn't fight his guns, Dante. I am an engineer, not a soldier. So I built a trap instead. I planted the loop exploit into the firmware, knowing Carlo wouldn't be able to resist using it for his final heist. And I taught Lily the trick of the clock. I told her that if anything ever happened to me, she had to find the man who owned the big monitors and look for the broken seconds.
I knew you were ruthless, Dante. But I also knew you were a man who lived by a code of truth. I forgive you for what Carlo will trick you into doing to me. All I ask is that you keep my little girl safe from the wolves.
Dante lowered the letter, his eyes burning with an uncharacteristic sting. He closed his fingers into a tight fist, the paper crumpling slightly under the pressure. Evan Hayes had known he was walking to his death, yet his final thoughts had been focused on protecting his child while leaving behind the exact weapon Dante needed to save his own empire from destruction.
"Marcus," Dante said, his voice thick with emotion.

"Yes, boss?"
"Call the family attorney. Tell him to prepare adoption papers, trust funds, and property transfers. Immediately."
