Chapter 6 - The First Step

Elena’s eyes opened slowly, squinting against the soft ambient light of the private room. Her throat was parched, her mind sluggish from the heavy narcotics.

""Dominic?"" she croaked.

""I'm here,"" he said instantly. His voice was steady, gentle, devoid of the lethal fury that had painted the hallway outside just twenty minutes earlier. He raised a cup with a bent straw to her lips, letting her take tiny sips of ice water.

Elena swallowed, her brow furrowing as the fog cleared from her mind. She looked at his face—the small cut along his cheekbone, the faint smell of gunpowder lingering on his wool coat.

""What happened out there?"" she asked.

""Nothing you need to worry about,"" Dominic said, smoothing her dark hair. ""The house is secure. The city is quiet. The only thing that matters in this entire world is in this bed.""

Dr. Vance slipped into the room, looking visibly shaken from the night’s violence, but he forced himself into professional mode. He approached the foot of the bed and pulled back the covers, exposing Elena’s bare feet.

""Elena, the anesthesia has fully cleared,"" Vance said gently. ""I need you to listen to my voice and try to move your toes on your left foot.""

Dominic’s breath seized in his throat. He leaned forward, his hand gripping the bed rail so hard the metal groaned.

Elena stared at her foot. She closed her eyes, focusing every ounce of her willpower, her forehead beading with sweat.

For three agonizing seconds, nothing moved.

Panic surged through Dominic’s veins. He felt the cold terror of a man watching the universe exact a brutal price.

Then, Elena let out a soft gasp.

Her big toe twitched. Then the other four curled downward, flexing against the white sheet.

""Good,"" Vance breathed, his face lighting up with relief. ""Now the right foot, Elena. Pull your toes back toward your shin.""

Elena exhaled, a tear escaping the corner of her eye. The right foot flexed upward cleanly, responding to the newly freed nerve pathways.

""Neurological function is intact,"" Vance declared, letting out a long, shuddering laugh. ""The decompression worked. The spinal cord is completely unburdened.""

Dominic buried his face in Elena’s open palm. A single, silent sob wracked his broad shoulders. He had survived gang wars, betrayal, street fights, and federal indictments without flinching. But watching his wife move her toes felt like watching the parting of the Red Sea.

""You're going to walk, Elena,"" he whispered against her skin. ""You're going to walk.""

May you like

Elena smiled through her tears, running her weak fingers through his thick, dark hair. ""I told you I was too stubborn to stay broken, Dominic.""

""We go home today,"" Dominic said, looking up, his dark eyes fierce with resolve. ""I have transformed the Lakewood bakery into a private sanctuary for you. No syndicate business. No armed guards within your sight. Just you, the recovery, and me.""
