Chapter 10 - Barefoot on the Flour

One year after the ice storm, the Rainer estate in Hunting Valley was full of life once more.
The heavy, suffocating silence that had once gripped the mansion had been banished completely. The guest room where Elena had hidden her agonizing secret had been remodeled into a bright, airy sunroom filled with lush green ferns and open glass French doors.
It was four o’clock on a crisp Sunday morning.
Dominic woke to an empty bed, but this time, there was no dread in his chest. No suspicions poisoned his thoughts.
He pulled on a pair of soft linen trousers and walked down the sweeping grand staircase. As he approached the spacious, custom-built kitchen at the back of the house, the sound of classic jazz floated through the air, accompanied by the unmistakable, heavenly aroma of caramelized sugar, roasted pecans, and warm yeast.
Dominic paused in the arched doorway, his heart swelling with an emotion so immense it made his breath catch.
Elena was standing at the butcher-block island.
She wore an oversized charcoal sweater belonging to him, draped casually over her shoulders, and a pair of faded denim shorts. Her back was bare of any brace, tape, or support. Only a thin, pale surgical scar ran neatly down the center of her lumbar spine—a battle ribbon of resilience and healing.
She was rolling out dough with steady, rhythmic strokes, swaying her hips to the gentle rhythm of the trumpet playing on the radio.
And she was completely barefoot.
Her feet moved across the cool hardwood floor with effortless grace, stepping lightly through a faint dusting of white flour that had spilled from the counter. She danced, turning in a slow, graceful circle, catching sight of him leaning against the doorframe.
Elena stopped, wiping a flour-dusted forearm across her brow, her dark eyes sparkling with vibrant health and pure joy.
""You're awake early, boss,"" she teased, using the title with playful affection.
Dominic crossed the kitchen floor in three long strides. He didn't say a word. He simply reached out, wrapped his strong arms around her waist, and lifted her off her feet, pulling her close against his chest.
Elena laughed, wrapping her legs around his waist, resting her forehead against his. She smelled like vanilla, warmth, and life.
""Put me down, Dominic, the rolls will burn!"" she laughed, swatting playfully at his shoulder.
""Let them burn,"" Dominic murmured, burying his face in her neck, breathing in the scent of the woman who had conquered death and restored his soul. ""I'll buy you a hundred more bakeries. I'll buy you the whole city.""
May you like
""I don't need the city,"" Elena whispered, her fingers tangling in his dark hair, pulling him down into a deep, lingering kiss that tasted of home. ""I already have everything I ever wanted.""
He set her down gently onto the flour-dusted floorboards, keeping one arm securely around her waist as she reached for the cooling rack. Outside the tall bay windows, the dawn broke over the Ohio valley, washing the kitchen in brilliant, golden light—a bright, unbroken morning that would never turn cold again."
