Chapter 6 - The Midnight Ambush

The rain hammered relentlessly against the rusted corrugated roofs of Calumet Shipping Terminal 4. Situated on the desolate industrial edge of Lake Michigan, the abandoned warehouse complex was supposed to be the rendezvous point where Dmitri’s strike team received their final tactical briefing.

Inside the warehouse office, Dmitri Volkov stood over a sprawling blueprint of the downtown cathedral, his heavy leather trench coat dripping with water. Dmitri was a hulking, scarred veteran of the Chechen conflicts who had operated as the Russian mob’s primary executioner in Chicago for over a decade.

Beside him, twelve heavily armed mercenaries checked the optics on their automatic rifles.

""The time is 11:55,"" Dmitri growled in heavily accented English. ""Where is the confirmation text from the Kensington woman?""

Right on cue, Dmitri’s burner phone chimed on the metal desk. A new message flashed on the screen:

Plan changed. Vincent uncovered Leo's discrepancies early. He brought all family capos and the emergency cash reserves to Terminal 4 to execute an emergency evacuation by cargo boat. They are trapped inside the main hangar. Strike now and slaughter them all.

Dmitri’s lips pulled back into a cruel, yellowed grin. ""Lock and load, boys. The Castellano empire dies tonight in the dark.""

The heavy steel roll-up door of the main hangar stood half-open, creaking ominously in the gale-force wind. Dmitri signaled his men forward with precise tactical hand gestures. They moved in standard two-man fire teams, sweeping their weapon lights through the shadows of stacked cargo containers.

In the center of the vast hangar, illuminated by a single swinging overhead halogen bulb, sat a solitary wooden chair.

Sitting tied to the chair, gagged with duct tape and shivering violently in her designer clothes, was Victoria Kensington. Beside her, bound to a structural pillar, was her father Arthur.

Dmitri halted his men, raising a fist. ""What the hell is this?""

He stepped forward cautiously, raising his rifle. He reached out and ripped the duct tape off Victoria’s mouth.

""It's a trap, Dmitri!"" Victoria screamed hysterically, tears ruining her expensive makeup. ""Run! He knows everything! Run—""

Before the word could fully leave her mouth, the massive metal hangar doors behind the Russians slammed shut with a thunderous, mechanical crash that shook the concrete floor.

High above, the darkness exploded with blinding white light as dozens of high-intensity stadium floodlights blinked to life, completely blinding Dmitri’s men.

From atop the cargo containers, forty armed Castellano soldiers racked their shotguns in unison—a sound like a rolling thunderclap.

""Drop your weapons, Dmitri,"" Vincent’s voice boomed through the warehouse PA system, echoing with absolute authority. ""Or my men turn this warehouse into a mass grave.""

Dmitri blinked against the blinding glare, his scarred face twisting with manic rage. Instead of surrendering, he spun toward his men, screaming in Russian: ""Fire! Kill them all!""

Muzzle flashes ripped through the hangar in a deafening crescendo of gunfire.

From my position inside the fortified control booth overlooking the floor, I didn't flinch. I sat before the terminal controlling the automated crane systems and dock machinery, my hands working the digital overrides.

""Marco, seal the eastern bay doors!"" I shouted into my headset. ""Dmitri is trying to fall back toward the secondary exit!""

With a single click of my mouse, I dropped a twenty-ton steel shipping container directly across the secondary exit corridor, cutting off Dmitri’s escape route with a deafening metallic roar.

Vincent moved through the crossfire like a phantom, his twin pistols barking with deadly precision. Russian gunmen fell one after another as Vincent and Marco advanced, completely outflanking the trapped mercenaries.

Dmitri, realizing he was entirely surrounded, abandoned his dying men and bolted toward the stairs leading up to my control booth, a heavy combat knife drawn in his hand.
