Chapter 3 - The Broken Cipher

The study was lined with dark mahogany and state-of-the-art secure servers. Vincent cleared his desk with a single violent sweep of his arm, sending stacks of architectural blueprints and wedding invitations crashing to the floor. He pulled out a military-grade Panasonic Toughbook and plugged in an air-gapped terminal.
""Show me,"" he said, stepping aside and offering me the executive leather chair.
I sat down, my fingers hovering over the keyboard. For three years, my mind had been suffocating under monotonous chores, forced to focus on lemon polish, silver tarnish, and laundry starch. The moment my fingers touched the keys, the fog cleared. Muscle memory took over. My hands moved in a blur of keystrokes, bypassing the graphic user interface and dropping straight into the Linux command line.
Marco stood behind me, crossing his arms with obvious skepticism. ""She’s a maid, Vince. You're trusting our family’s life on a girl who scrubs baseboards?""
""Shut your mouth and watch,"" Vincent snapped without taking his eyes off my screen.
The USB drive mounted with a high-pitched digital chime. A wall of hex-encoded characters flashed across the monitor, protected by an active twenty-four-character alphanumeric barrier with a self-destruct trigger set for three failed attempts.
""She’s using an AES-256 cascading key,"" I muttered under my breath, analyzing the packet headers. ""Victoria didn't write this herself. She had Dmitri’s Russian tech team configure it. Look at the variable declarations—they're formatted in Cyrillic.""
""Can you bypass it without wiping the drive?"" Vincent asked, leaning down so close his warm breath brushed my ear, sending an electric jolt through my spine.
""I don't need to bypass it,"" I said, a cold smile touching my lips. ""I’m going to reverse the handshake. Victoria’s vanity is her biggest weakness. Look at the salt string at the end of the hash: VK-1998. She used her debutante ball debut date as the cryptographic salt.""
I entered a custom Python brute-force script, isolating the cryptographic salt and running a dictionary attack against known Kensington family corporate entity names. The terminal fans whined as the processor spiked to maximum capacity. Ten seconds. Twenty seconds. The progress bar stuttered at eighty percent.
Suddenly, the screen flashed bright emerald green.
ACCESS GRANTED.
Directories cascaded down the screen in thousands of neatly labeled folders: offshore accounts, audio recordings, scanned contracts, and encrypted chat logs.
Marco let out a low whistle of disbelief, while Vincent’s jaw locked into pure granite.
""Look at this directory,"" I said, clicking on a folder labeled Operation White Veil. ""It’s the entire tactical map for tomorrow’s wedding ceremony.""
We leaned in. The documents contained floorplans of the grand cathedral. Red markers indicated the placement of six Russian snipers positioned in the high organ lofts. Blue markers showed Leo Vance’s private security detail, which had been instructed to step down from their defensive perimeters the moment Vincent and Victoria reached the altar.
""They aren't just planning to shoot me,"" Vincent whispered, his eyes scanning the horrifying breakdown. ""They're executing my entire bloodline. Marco, our uncles, our capos. The moment the priest asks for objections, Dmitri’s men open fire from the choir balcony with suppressed submachine guns. Then Leo secures the exits, announces that the Russians launched a surprise attack, and assumes emergency control of the Castellano syndicate.""
""And Victoria?"" Marco asked, his face pale with fury. ""What does she get?""
""She gets everything,"" I answered, opening a scanned legal trust. ""She’s named as the primary beneficiary in Vincent’s revised estate will. A will that was supposedly signed by Vincent two weeks ago.""
Vincent stared at the document. His signature was at the bottom, perfectly forged down to the slight flourish on the final letter.
""I never signed this,"" Vincent said, his voice terrifyingly calm.
""Leo brought that document to you among the zoning permits for the new river casino,"" I pointed out, showing the meta-data timestamp. ""He slipped the signature page in between two land deeds. You signed it believing it was a municipal filing.""
Before Vincent could answer, the security intercom on the desk chimed with an urgent double buzz. The voice of his front lobby guard came through the speaker:
""Boss, Miss Kensington is in the elevator. She’s coming up with her father and security chief Leo. They said they brought the final floral arrangements and security passes for tomorrow.""

Vincent looked down at me, his eyes gleaming with a lethal, predatory fire. ""Penny, take this drive and stay in the hidden panic room behind the bookcase. Do not make a sound, no matter what you hear.""
""No,"" I said, standing up on my good foot and meeting his fierce gaze without flinching. ""Don't hide me away like a coward, Vincent. Let me stand right beside you. When they walk through that door, I want Victoria to see the maid she stepped on holding the rope that will hang her.""
