Chapter 10 - The Queen of Chicago

Six months later.

The grand ballroom of the Drake Hotel was illuminated by thousands of twinkling crystal chandeliers, filled to capacity with Chicago’s elite—governors, judges, high-ranking business leaders, and the heads of every syndicate from New York to Detroit.

Tonight wasn't a gathering of criminals operating in the shadows. It was the formal inaugural gala for the Thomas Abbott Foundation for Corporate Whistleblowers, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing legal, financial, and physical protection for forensic accountants who exposed corporate and syndicate corruption.

I stood at the top of the grand marble staircase, dressed in an emerald green silk evening gown that hugged every curve of my body, diamond earrings catching the light with every step. My hair cascaded down my shoulders in soft waves, and my chin was held high with an elegance that made the room fall completely silent as I appeared.

Beside me, looking impossibly handsome in a custom-tailored black tuxedo, stood Vincent Castellano.

Under Vincent’s leadership, the syndicate had undergone a radical, historic transformation. The dirty street rackets and extortion rings had been completely dismantled, replaced by legitimate international logistics, clean shipping contracts, and community redevelopment funds. The city that had once lived in terror of the Castellano name now respected it.

Vincent offered me his arm, a proud, tender smile touching his lips. ""Ready to face the lions, Miss Abbott?""

""The lions don't scare me anymore, Vincent,"" I replied with a confident smirk, resting my hand comfortably on his arm. ""They know who writes their checks now.""

As we walked down the grand staircase together, thunderous applause echoed through the ballroom. At the base of the stairs, Marco raised a glass of vintage champagne toward us with a genuine grin.

My younger sister, Chloe, radiant and healthy after completing her first semester of medical school, ran up and wrapped her arms around my neck, whispering through happy tears, ""Dad would be so proud of you, Penny. So proud.""

Later that evening, long after the speeches had concluded and the orchestra was playing a slow, romantic waltz, Vincent guided me out onto the private terrace overlooking the glowing waters of Lake Michigan.

The cool night breeze rustled the silk of my dress as Vincent gently wrapped both arms around my waist from behind, pulling my back flush against his broad, solid chest. I leaned my head back against his shoulder, closing my eyes and listening to the steady, comforting beat of his heart.

""You built an empire out of ashes, Penny,"" Vincent murmured against my hair, his lips brushing against my temple.

""We built it, Vincent,"" I corrected softly, turning around in his embrace to look up into his striking dark eyes. ""Together.""

Vincent reached into his tuxedo pocket, but this time, he didn't pull out a ledger or a gun. He produced a velvet box, opening it to reveal a breathtaking emerald-cut diamond ring that caught the moonlight with brilliant clarity.

He dropped to one knee, looking up at me not as the untouchable mafia king of Chicago, but as a man who had completely surrendered his heart.

""Three years ago, you walked into my house invisible, and I was too blind to see the greatest treasure in this city was right in front of me,"" Vincent said, his voice thick with raw emotion. ""You saved my life, Penelope. You redeemed my soul. I don't want a fake alliance to secure an empire. I want a true partner. Will you marry me, Penny? Will you be my queen?""

Looking down at the man who had torn up my debts, avenged my father, and loved me with an unyielding fierce loyalty, the tears that filled my eyes were tears of absolute joy.

May you like

""Yes,"" I whispered, holding out my trembling hand. ""A thousand times, yes.""

Vincent slid the diamond onto my finger, rose to his feet, and pulled me into an intoxicating, passionate kiss that sealed our future forever under the Chicago stars. The maid who had scrubbed the floors in silence had finally claimed her throne."
