Chapter 7 - The Poisoned Heirloom

By two in the morning, the Hudson Valley estate looked less like a luxury home and more like an armed garrison. High-powered floodlights illuminated the perimeter, casting long shadows across the rolling lawns where party guests had danced hours earlier. Outside the iron gates, dozens of black SUVs with tinted windows idle in the fog—the combined forces of the Four Houses, their engines humming like a swarm of angry hornets.
Inside the grand dining room, the atmosphere was suffocating.
A long mahogany table dominated the center of the room. At one end sat Julian Mercer, his trench coat open, revealing two shoulder holsters, his hands resting flat on the polished wood. To his left sat Don Carmine Romano, an eighty-year-old mafia patriarch who had survived four decades of turf wars, and Madame Chen, who controlled the maritime freight and gambling dens across the eastern seaboard.
Behind each leader stood four heavily armed bodyguards, their hands never straying far from their waistbands.
Harrison Vale sat near the head of the table, his face a masterclass in performative sorrow. He dabbed at his forehead with a silk handkerchief.
""We must keep our heads,"" Harrison pleaded, his voice full of artificial tremor. ""My nephew Adrian has clearly suffered a mental break. First, he ordered the unprovoked strike on Julian’s shipping yards in Newark, and now he locks down the estate and summons you all like schoolchildren. As the senior elder of the Vale family, I apologize for this madness. I will personally compensate the Mercer family for their losses.""
""Compensate me?"" Julian Mercer snarled, leaning across the table, his veins bulging against his neck. ""Two of my men are dead in Newark, Harrison! Your nephew violated the treaty! He signed his own death warrant the moment his trucks crossed the river!""
""The treaty has not been violated,"" a smooth, resonant voice echoed from the grand double doors.
The room went instantly silent. The bodyguards shifted their weight, weapons clicking off safe.
Adrian Vale strode into the dining room. He had changed into a fresh charcoal three-piece suit, his posture tall, imposing, and completely unfazed by the dozens of barrels indirectly pointed at his chest. He walked with measured steps to the head of the table and took his seat in the high-backed leather chair that had belonged to his father.
Beside him walked Seth Calder, carrying a heavy, velvet-lined mahogany box.
""You have a lot of nerve sitting in that chair, Adrian,"" Don Romano wheezed, his ancient, gravelly voice cutting through the tension. ""Mercer’s claims are serious. If the Vale House attacked Newark without sanction from the Seal, the Four Houses will strip you of your title and execute you before dawn.""
""The Newark strike was indeed an unsanctioned act of terrorism,"" Adrian agreed calmly, resting his elbows on the table and steepling his fingers. ""However, it was not ordered by me.""
Julian Mercer laughed bitterly. ""You expect us to believe that? The trucks had your family’s registered plates! The shooters carried Vale syndicate weapons!""
""They did,"" Adrian said. ""Because the man who ordered the attack stole those trucks and weapons from our south warehouse three days ago. The same man who broke into my personal study tonight, attempted to steal the Vale Seal, and left Mercer’s wax crest on my desk to spark a war between us.""
Harrison sighed heavily, shaking his head with exaggerated pity. ""Adrian, please, stop this. You are hallucinating enemies in the shadows. Gentlemen, my nephew is cracking under the pressure of leadership. For the stability of our commerce, I propose that under Article Four, the Vale chair be temporarily transferred to—""
""Be quiet, Harrison,"" Adrian snapped, his voice hitting the room like the crack of a whip.
Harrison stiffened, his eyes narrowing with venom. ""Show some respect, boy! I am your elder! I practically raised you after your father neglected you!""
""You raised me to be a weapon,"" Adrian said coldly. ""And you tried to murder my brother Marcus when he discovered your greed.""
A collective murmur rippled through the table. Madame Chen raised an elegant eyebrow. ""Marcus Vale? Marcus has been dead for seven years, Adrian. What does a ghost have to do with tonight?""
""Marcus did not die on the bridge,"" Adrian said, signaling Seth.
Seth placed the velvet-lined mahogany box on the center of the table and unlatched the brass clasps. Inside rested the heavy gold Vale Seal, alongside a stack of encrypted bank ledgers, financial wire transfers, and a small audio recording device.
""Seven years ago, Harrison Vale cut the brake lines on Marcus's vehicle,"" Adrian announced to the stunned bosses. ""When Marcus miraculously survived the plunge into the river, Harrison kept him hidden under threat of murdering his secret wife and child. For seven years, Harrison embezzled over forty million dollars from our collective port fees, laundering the money through dummy corporations in the Cayman Islands under Julian Mercer's name.""
Mercer’s eyes widened in genuine shock. ""What?!""
""Harrison played us all,"" Adrian continued. ""He wanted me to kill Mercer tonight in revenge for the Newark attack. Then, he planned to have Marcus kill me, framing it as a brotherly feud. With both of us eliminated, Harrison would execute Marcus, claim the Vale chair, and present himself as the peacemaker of the city.""
""Lies! All desperate, pathetic lies!"" Harrison shouted, jumping to his feet, knocking his chair backward. ""You have no proof! You are spinning fairy tales to save your neck from Mercer’s vengeance!""
""I don't need fairy tales, Uncle,"" Adrian replied with an icy smile. ""I have the witness who saw you hand the Mercer wax stamp to the masked man.""

The service door swung open.
Marcus Vale stepped into the light of the chandelier, holding his six-year-old daughter Emily by the hand.
