Chapter 6 - A Mother’s Hidden Secret

The reunion between the two brothers in the ruined boathouse was not sealed with tears or embraces, but with the cold, shared realization of how thoroughly they had been manipulated. Within twenty minutes, Seth had transported Marcus back to the main estate through the underground drainage tunnels originally built to smuggle whiskey during the 1920s.
They emerged into the vaulted wine cellar.
Rachel was standing by the iron grate, her breath catching in her throat as the secret panel slid back. When Marcus stepped through, bloodied, bruised, and covered in soot, she let out a strangled cry and threw her arms around his neck.
""You're alive,"" Rachel sobbed, burying her face against his chest. ""I thought... when the gunfire started down by the river, I thought I’d lost you forever.""
Marcus wrapped his strong arms around her, burying his face in her blond hair, the hardened killer breaking down into a weeping man. ""I'm sorry, Rachel. God, I'm so sorry. I thought staying dead was the only way to keep you safe from the family.""
""I never cared about the family,"" Rachel wept, hitting his chest with her small fist before pulling him close again. ""I only cared about you!""
A small cough interrupted them.
Emily stood by the corner of the cellar, rubbing her eyes with the sleeve of her yellow dress. She looked at the bruised man holding her mother, then down at the plastic lantern in her hand.
Marcus slowly sank to his knees on the damp stone floor. He looked at the little girl, tears cutting clean lines through the grime on his scarred cheeks. ""Emily?""
Emily walked over slowly, tilting her head with the innocent curiosity only a child could possess. She reached out a small hand and touched the jagged scar on his chin. ""You were the man in the white mask.""
""I was,"" Marcus whispered, his voice cracking. ""I was wearing a bad costume because I was foolish. But I'm never putting it on again. I promise.""
""Did you bring Firefly back to life?"" Emily asked, holding up her plastic lantern.
Marcus pulled his daughter into an embrace that seemed tight enough to fuse their souls together, his broad shoulders shaking with silent sobs.
Adrian stood by the archway, watching the scene in silence, a profound weight lifting from his own shoulders. For ten years, he had believed himself alone in the world—a cold, ruthless king ruling an empire of ashes. But as he looked at Marcus, Rachel, and Emily, the ruthless crime boss realized what he was truly fighting for. It was no longer about the Vale chair. It was about reclaiming the bloodline from the parasites who had infected it.
""Seth,"" Adrian whispered, turning toward his lieutenant. ""What is Mercer's status?""
""Julian Mercer took the bait Harrison fed him,"" Seth reported grimly. ""Three convoys of Mercer’s soldiers are converging on our northern gates right now. They think we hit their warehouses in Newark twenty minutes ago. Harrison’s men staged the attack using our signature black Suburbans. Mercer is coming here to burn this house to the ground.""
""And Harrison?""
""Harrison is locked in the security bunker upstairs, guarded by five of our men,"" Seth said. ""He still believes Marcus is dead at the boathouse and that Mercer will eliminate you. He’s waiting for the dust to settle so he can walk out as the sole survivor.""
Adrian looked back at Marcus, who had stood up, holding Emily securely against his hip.
""Marcus,"" Adrian said. ""Can you still shoot?""
Marcus looked at his older brother, the haze of grief completely replaced by cold, lethal clarity. ""Give me a rifle. Let's finish what our father should have handled thirty years ago.""
""No rifles yet,"" Adrian said, a calculating smirk appearing on his lips. ""Harrison wants a war between Vale and Mercer. Let’s give him a show. But instead of playing his game, we are going to invite the entire city to watch him hang himself.""
Adrian turned to Rachel. ""Rachel, take Emily deeper into the panic vault. Seth, notify the heads of the other two Houses—the Romano family and the Chen syndicate. Tell them Adrian Vale has called an emergency conclave under Article One of the Grand Treaty. Tell them that if they do not arrive at the Hudson estate within forty-five minutes, they will be considered conspirators against the Seal.""

""Boss, bringing all Four Houses here while Mercer is invading?"" Seth warned. ""That’s walking into a powder keg with a blowtorch.""
""Then let it explode,"" Adrian replied, adjusting his cuffs. ""It's time to burn the rot out of this city.""
