Chapter 3 - The Ghost of a Fallen Brother

The stone walls of the wine vault seemed to close in around Adrian. The damp chill of the earth, seventy feet below the lively music of his anniversary party, felt like the inside of an open tomb.

""Marcus is dead,"" Adrian said, his voice flat, trying to anchor himself against the sudden storm in his mind. ""I identified the body myself at the county morgue seven years ago. The dental records matched. The signet ring was fused to his finger.""

""Harrison provided those dental records, didn't he?"" Rachel said, wiping tears from her cheeks with the rough hem of her gray uniform. ""Harrison handled the coroner. Harrison handled the closed-casket funeral. Marcus told me everything the night before the crash. He knew Harrison was skimming millions from the port unions. Marcus was going to bring the ledgers to your father. But before he could reach the manor, his brakes failed on the gorge road.""

Seth cursed under his breath, leaning against the cold stone rack. ""The brakes. Everyone thought Marcus was drunk. Harrison stood by the grave and wept louder than the rest of us combined.""

Adrian closed his eyes. Memories from seven years ago assaulted him with sickening clarity. Harrison placing a heavy, trembling hand on his shoulder at the cemetery. You are the only son left now, Adrian. The family depends on you. Do not let Marcus’s recklessness distract you from duty.

It had all been an engineered slaughter. Harrison hadn't just tried to murder Marcus; he had used Marcus’s supposed death to isolate Adrian, turning him into a hardened, suspicious ruler who trusted no one—except his doting uncle.

""Why tonight?"" Adrian asked, looking down at Rachel. ""If Marcus survived that fall, why wait seven years? Why break into my study like a thief in the night?""

""Because he thinks you did it,"" Rachel whispered, looking up with raw grief in her eyes. ""Harrison found Marcus three years ago living under an alias in Montreal. Harrison didn't kill him then. Instead, he spent three years feeding Marcus forged documents, wire transfers, and fake recorded calls, convincing him that you were the one who cut the brake lines on the bridge. Harrison told Marcus that you wanted the chair so badly you were willing to execute your own flesh and blood.""

The pieces fell into place with brutal, devastating logic.

Harrison had kept Marcus alive as a sleeper weapon. A vengeful ghost kept in reserve until the tenth anniversary of Adrian’s reign. Harrison’s plan was breathtaking in its cruelty: Marcus breaks in, steals the sacred Seal of the Four Houses, and leaves Julian Mercer’s crest behind. Adrian retaliates by slaughtering Mercer. The city erupts into total gang warfare. During the chaos, Harrison unleashes Marcus to assassinate Adrian in revenge. Once Adrian and Mercer are dead, Harrison reveals Marcus as a rogue murderer, puts a bullet in Marcus's head, and steps forward as the last honorable patriarch to take the supreme chair of the four syndicates.

A clean sweep. Three birds, one stone, executed by a man who smiled like a loving grandfather.

""And Emily?"" Adrian asked, his voice shaking with a rare, terrifying fury. ""Did Marcus know she was here tonight?""

""No,"" Rachel said, shaking her head frantically. ""I took this job three months ago under a false maiden name just to see if the rumors about Marcus being near the city were true. Marcus had no idea we were on the estate. When Emily took that green lantern upstairs tonight... Marcus saw her face in the dark corridor. That's why he dropped the Seal. That's why he ran.""

On the wool blanket, little Emily stirred. She rubbed her eyes with a chubby fist, her green plastic lantern rolling onto the floor with a hollow clatter.

""Uncle Adrian?"" she murmured, her voice thick with sleep.

Adrian walked over and knelt beside the child. He looked closely at her features—the stubborn curve of her eyebrow, the unmistakable shade of hazel in her eyes. It was the same face he had protected when he and Marcus were boys sneaking through the apple orchards of this very estate.

""I'm here, Emily,"" Adrian said softly, reaching out to brush a stray strand of hair from her forehead.

""The masked man,"" Emily whispered, tugging at his lapel just as she had on the lawn. ""He took off his mask when he saw me. He had a boo-boo on his chin, just like in Mommy’s picture. He started crying, Uncle Adrian. He told me to hide.""

Adrian swallowed the lump of ice in his throat. He looked at Seth.

""Seth, shut down the gates. Nobody leaves the grounds. Tell the security detail outside that Julian Mercer’s men spotted an intruder near the boathouse. I want every spotlight turned toward the water.""

""What about Harrison?"" Seth asked, his hand hovering near his weapon.

""Harrison thinks his plan is still on track,"" Adrian said, standing tall, his eyes burning with lethal determination. ""He thinks the letter worked. Let him think the beast is unleashed. We are going to turn his own trap inside out.""
