Chapter 1 - The Shadow in the Hallway

The silence between uncle and nephew hung heavier than smoke over a battlefield. Harrison Vale stepped out of the amber glow of the wall sconces, his Italian tailored suit immaculate, his silver cufflinks catching the low light. The grandfatherly warmth in his eyes was unchanged, but Adrian Vale had been trained by masters of deception. For the first time in thirty-four years, Adrian looked at his uncle not as the man who had taught him how to survive, but as a predator studying another predator across a carcass.

""Uncle Harrison,"" Adrian said evenly, smoothly closing the study door behind his back with the heel of his shoe until the latch clicked. ""Just checking on the security team. Seth thought he saw a stray spark land near the south awning during your display. We wanted to be sure the roof was clear before the last round went off.""

Harrison’s smile widened, crinkling the skin around his warm brown eyes. ""Always thorough, Adrian. That is why your father chose you over everyone else. But you shouldn't worry about sparks tonight. I calibrated the mortars myself down by the pier. Every ember turns to ash thirty feet above the chimney."" He paused, his gaze drifting from Adrian to Seth Calder, lingering on Seth’s right hand, which rested casually inside his charcoal jacket against the leather holster of his SIG Sauer. ""Is everything alright, Seth? You look like you're standing vigil at a wake.""

""Just keeping an eye on the grounds, sir,"" Seth replied, his voice flat as granite. ""Big crowds make me restless.""

""Ah, the burden of the crown,"" Harrison chuckled, shaking his head. He drew a silver cigar cutter from his vest pocket. ""Your father never enjoyed his own banquets either. Come downstairs, Adrian. The heads of the four syndicates are drinking your vintage scotch. Julian Mercer has already proposed two toasts in your honor, though I suspect he swallowed half of his own spit doing so. If you hide up here in the shadows, people begin to whisper that the lion is growing tired.""

""I am never tired, Harrison,"" Adrian said quietly.

Harrison held his nephew’s gaze for two seconds. A flicker of something cold and sharp crossed the older man’s irises—gone so fast an ordinary man would have sworn it was a trick of the flickering wall lights. ""Good. That is what I wanted to hear. Do not keep them waiting.""

Harrison turned on his polished Oxford shoes and strolled down the carpeted gallery toward the grand marble staircase, humming an old jazz tune under his breath.

Adrian didn't move until the sound of the footsteps faded completely beneath the muffled roar of the brass band outside.

""Did you catch it?"" Seth whispered, stepping closer, his knuckles white against his jacket lapel.

""The cigar cutter,"" Adrian murmured, his jaw rigid. ""He pulled it from his right pocket. Harrison is left-handed. His right hand was trembling.""

Adrian turned and re-entered the dark study. He walked straight to the mahogany desk where the white envelope rested beneath the unlit brass lamp. Using a pen from the brass tray, he lifted the corner of the wax seal. A stag beneath three stars. Julian Mercer’s proud family crest. It was neat, arrogant, and deliberately placed.

""Mercer is arrogant, but he isn't stupid,"" Adrian whispered, staring at the typed warning. ""Julian Mercer would never leave his personal seal at the scene of a home invasion unless he wanted an all-out bloodbath tonight. Or unless someone wanted me to rip Mercer’s throat out and start a war that burns both our houses to the ground.""

""If it wasn't Mercer, who was under the mask?"" Seth asked.

Adrian’s thoughts flashed back to the lawn. Wet grass against his tailored trousers. A plastic toy shaped like an insect. And a six-year-old girl named Emily whose green lantern had accidentally disrupted a masterstroke of betrayal.

""The looping camera footage at 9:47,"" Adrian said, his voice dropping into the terrifying register that had made three rival syndicates surrender without a bullet fired five years ago. ""The safe combination. The three-minute window during the gold fireworks that only one man coordinated.""

Seth went rigid. ""Harrison.""

""Not Harrison himself. Harrison is sixty-three; he doesn't sprint up back stairs in a white mask,"" Adrian said. ""He hired a ghost. And whoever that ghost is, he knows someone in this house saw him. Find Rachel Walker. Bring her and Emily to the private cellar beneath the wine vault. If anyone so much as looks at that child wrong, put a bullet through their skull.""
