Chapter 17 - The Ghost at the Gate

The first frost of late autumn painted the grass around the Kincaid farmhouse in a brilliant dusting of white crystals as the sun crested the eastern ridge.
Ryker stood on the porch, loading his tools into the back of his truck, when a sleek, matte-black town car with out-of-state diplomatic plates slowly rolled up the gravel driveway, coming to a smooth stop near the porch steps.
The rear door opened, and Arthur Sterling stepped out.
He didn't look like Gideon or Marcus Vale. He wore a quiet, impeccably tailored gray cashmere overcoat, his silver hair neatly combed, his expression polite and entirely non-threatening.
Ryker didn't reach for a weapon, but his hand rested naturally near his belt as he walked down the porch steps to meet him.
"Arthur Sterling," the man introduced himself smoothly, extending a clean, manicured hand. "Senior managing partner of Sterling-Kross Global Equities. And for the record, entirely unrelated to Victoria Sterling-Cross."
Ryker looked at the extended hand, then up into Arthur’s calm, calculating eyes. He didn't shake it.
"You're driving a very expensive car for a man who claims he's not part of the family business," Ryker said flatly. "State your business, Mr. Sterling. My grandfather doesn't take unannounced corporate visitors before breakfast."
Arthur slowly withdrew his hand, sliding it into his coat pocket with a faint, respectful smile. "Fair enough, Mr. Kincaid. I didn't come here to negotiate a hostile takeover. I came to offer an alliance."
"An alliance," Ryker repeated, the word dripping with skepticism.
"Victoria is desperate," Arthur said, lowering his voice slightly. "Her offshore maritime syndicate is collapsing under federal RICO scrutiny, and her domestic assets have been seized. But out of desperation comes unpredictability. She has spent the last forty-8 hours funneling remaining dark-pool capital into the hands of your former cousin, Julian Sterling, through a network of corrupt prison guards."
Ryker’s eyes narrowed instantly. "Julian is locked in a maximum-security federal facility three states away. He has no access to capital."
"He has access to something far more dangerous than money," Arthur replied seriously. "Information. He knows every secret land covenant, every unrecorded property easement, and every vulnerable municipal contract your family holds. And Victoria is using him to orchestrate a multi-front legal and physical sabotage campaign against your infrastructure projects."
Just as Ryker opened his mouth to reply, the heavy iron security gates at the bottom of the driveway suddenly buzzed, flashing a red warning light on the estate’s main security console.

Down at the gate, Sheriff Dalton Reeves’s cruiser had pulled up, its emergency lights flashing frantically.
Ryker turned away from Arthur, sprinting toward his truck, shouting over his shoulder: "If you're lying to me, Mr. Sterling, your car won't make it back to the highway."
