Chapter 4 - The Unmasking

For three agonizing seconds, the only sound in the dining room was the steady ticking of the grandfather clock. Chloe’s mouth opened slightly, but no words came out. Her carefully constructed facade of innocence cracked right down the middle, revealing the cold, calculating opportunist underneath.
"The... the security room?" she whispered, her voice losing its polished lingo-executive cadence and dropping into a harsh, panicked rasp. "What are you talking about? You went to Toronto."
"A convenient fiction," I replied calmly, picking up my wine glass and taking a slow sip. "Just a small test to see how my household operates when I'm out of town. You know, make sure the staff is doing their job. Make sure everyone is happy."
"Alexander, listen to me," Chloe stammered, her hands flying up as she leaned across the table, her fingernails digging into the mahogany. "Those cameras... they don't capture context. The girls were misbehaving, they were running wild in the formal living room, and Marisol was encouraging their disrespect. I was just trying to establish boundaries! As the lady of the house—"
"As the lady of the house?" I interrupted, my voice suddenly cutting through the air like a razor blade. I stood up so violently my chair scraped backward against the hardwood floor with a sharp screech. "You grabbed my six-year-old daughter by the wrist so hard you left bruises. You ripped her dead mother's final gift out of her hands and threw it out of reach just to watch her cry. You told a woman who has loved and cared for my children that she is 'nobody' in this house."
Chloe stood up too, panic finally breaking through her disbelief. "They need discipline! You spoil them rotten because you feel guilty about Sarah! If someone doesn't crack the whip, they're going to grow up entitled, spoiled brats!"
"Don't you ever speak of Sarah," I roared, slamming my palms down onto the table so hard the crystal glasses rattled. The sheer volume of my voice echoed off the high vaulted ceilings, silencing the entire room. "Sarah loved those girls with every breath in her body. And you—you venomous, calculating fraud—used my absence to run a reign of terror against two motherless little girls who only ever treated you with kindness."
Chloe’s expression shifted instantly from panic to cold, defensive defiance. The mask was completely off now; there was no point in pretending anymore. Her eyes narrowed into slits of pure malice.
"You think you're so noble, don't you?" she hissed, stepping around the table and walking toward me, her heels clicking with sharp, deliberate strikes. "A billionaire tech genius who thinks he can buy love with private jets and designer clothes! You're never home, Alexander! You leave those kids with maids and tutors while you chase your next billion-dollar acquisition! I was doing you a favor by toughening them up. This world doesn't care about sensitive little girls!"
"Get out," I said, pointing a finger toward the grand double doors of the dining room. My hand was steady, but my entire body was shaking with a mixture of rage and profound self-loathing. "Pack your bags. Get your clothes, your jewelry, your art collection, and everything else you accumulated while playing the devoted fiancée. Get out of my house tonight."
Chloe let out a harsh, bitter laugh, tossing her blonde hair over her shoulder. "You think you can just dismiss me like an employee? We have a prenuptial agreement, sure, but do you have any idea what the press will do when I leak the story of the emotionally abusive, absentee billionaire whose fiancée tried to save his neglected children from chaos? Your stock prices will tank before the market opens on Monday."
May you like
"Try it," I said quietly, stepping close enough that she could see the cold fury burning in my eyes. "Leak whatever you want. But before you do, remember that I own the security footage of every single threat, every physical intimidation, and every cruel word you uttered in this house. Try selling that story to TMZ when Hector hands the entire encrypted dossier to my high-powered legal team. You won't just walk away with nothing, Chloe. You'll be lucky if you don't face criminal charges for child endangerment."
The blood completely drained from her face. She realized, with sudden, terrifying clarity, that she had played her hand against a man who held all the cards.
