Chapter 1 - The Hollow Ring

The heavy oak door of the security room clicked shut behind me, sealing in the smell of ozone, hot electronics, and a brand-new kind of panic. Hector stood silently by the main console, his broad shoulders tense beneath a black suit jacket. On the central screen, the freeze-frame of Chloe’s hand locked around six-year-old Sofia’s wrist seemed to burn right through the high-definition display. My heart was slamming against my ribs like a trapped bird. How could I have been so blind? For months, I had flown across continents, closed billion-dollar tech mergers, and signed off on multi-million-dollar philanthropic initiatives, all while missing the slow-motion destruction of my own home. I thought I was building an empire to protect my daughters, Valeria and Sofia, after their mother passed away. Instead, I had invited a viper into the nursery and handed her the keys.

"Freeze frame that moment, Hector," I ordered, my voice dangerously low. "Save every angle. Audio and video. Do not let a single second of this footage be overwritten."

"Already done, Mr. Vance," Hector replied, his professional detachment slipping just enough to reveal a flash of genuine disgust. "The backup servers are downloading it right now. What are your orders? Do you want me to escort her off the property immediately?"

"No," I said, my teeth grinding together so hard my jaw ached. "If I throw her out now, she plays the victim. She spins a narrative. I want airtight proof of everything she has done—every lie, every threat, every psychological game she has played behind my back. I am marrying her in three months. Or rather, I was marrying her."

The thought of the wedding invitations already printed on heavy ivory cardstock made my stomach churn. Chloe had designed them herself, choosing a minimalist, ultra-expensive font that projected sophistication, elegance, and high-society perfection. Everyone in Los Angeles envied us. The tech titan and the stunning, soft-spoken gallery curator. But on screen, the soft-spoken curator was gone, replaced by a ruthless tyrant who treated my motherless children like disposable inconveniences. I stared at the monitors, watching the playback rewind to earlier that morning. Seeing Chloe slip out of our master bedroom, adjust her cashmere sweater, and walk down the grand staircase with a serene, angelic smile while muttering venomous instructions to the household staff under her breath made my skin crawl. It was a masterclass in deception. I had trusted her because she never complained about my travel schedule, because she always kissed my cheek when I walked through the door, and because she told me she loved my daughters as if they were her own.

“They’re becoming far too attached to her,” Chloe’s voice echoed in my mind from our dinner conversation the night before.

She had projected her own cruelty onto Marisol. She knew Marisol loved my daughters unconditionally, and she wanted that pure, protective presence out of the house. She wanted total control.

"Mr. Vance," Hector interrupted softly, breaking my spiral of rage. "She's moving toward the kitchen. Marisol is taking the girls upstairs."

I leaned back into the leather chair, my eyes glued to the monitors. "Play it. Let's see what else my fiancée has been hiding."
