Chapter 9 - The Truth Unveiled

Six months later, the spring breeze off the Atlantic Ocean carried the sweet scent of blooming white hydrangeas through the open French doors of the Foster estate. Ava sat in the private study, her hands resting over her prominent, beautifully rounded eight-month baby bump. Her skin glowed with health, the dark circles of residency long replaced by radiant vitality.

Beside her, little Mason, now eight months old and crawling with boundless energy, pulled himself up against her knee, babbling happily and holding out a wooden block. Sophia walked in carrying two glasses of freshly squeezed pomegranate juice, her cheeks flushed with healthy color, looking every bit the formidable, elegant matriarch she was born to be.

“The final audit came back from the federal investigators this morning,” Sophia said, handing Ava a glass and sitting on the velvet sofa opposite her. “Beatrice and Dane had embezzled nearly seventy million dollars over five years through phantom medical supply shell companies. If you hadn't stopped that tea, and if you hadn't seen through the chemical rash on the babies... Adrian and I would have been dead, and my children would have been wards of Beatrice’s offshore trust.”

“You don't owe me anything, Sophia,” Ava said with a warm smile, gently stroking Mason’s soft curls. “You’re my family.”

“You saved us all, Ava,” Sophia replied, her eyes shimmering with heartfelt affection. “And more importantly, you brought my brother back to life. I haven't seen Adrian smile like this since we were children.”

Right on cue, the double doors swung open, and Adrian entered the room. He wore a crisp, tailored navy suit, but the moment his eyes landed on Ava, every trace of the hard corporate executive melted away into pure, unabashed devotion. He crossed the room in long strides, completely ignoring the paperwork on his desk to kneel directly beside Ava’s chair.

He leaned in, pressing a soft, lingering kiss to her lips before resting his cheek against the curve of her stomach.

“How is our little miracle today?” Adrian murmured.

As if responding to his father’s voice, a distinct, powerful kick pushed against Adrian’s cheek. Adrian let out a low, joyful laugh, his broad hand splaying over the movement.

He is strong, Mommy, the baby’s voice echoed in Ava’s mind, but the psychic presence felt different now—softer, more distant, gradually fading like a morning mist as the child’s physical brain developed toward birth. He has his father’s stubborn chin.

Ava smiled down at Adrian, running her fingers through his dark hair. “He’s ready to meet you. He hasn't stopped kicking since the board meeting ended.”

“The board meeting was a complete landslide,” Adrian said, looking up at her with fierce pride. “The board unanimously voted to name the new pediatric research center in Manhattan after you. The Dr. Ava Carter Institute for Neonatal Health.”

Ava gasped, tears pricking her eyes. “Adrian, that’s too much! I haven't even finished my residency!”

“You wrote the diagnostic protocol that saved five premature infants when the best private specialists in the country failed,” Adrian said firmly, standing up and pulling a small velvet box from his suit pocket. “And you saved the CEO. The board considers it the best investment this company has ever made.”

Ava’s heart skipped a beat as Adrian sank down onto one knee on the Persian rug. Sophia gasped softly, clapping her hands over her mouth in delighted surprise.

Adrian opened the box, revealing a flawless, radiant-cut ten-carat blue diamond surrounded by a halo of platinum, catching the morning sunlight like an ocean wave.

“Ava,” Adrian said, his deep voice trembling with raw, unvarnished emotion. “You walked into my life during my darkest night, and you brought light to a house that was rotting from within. You gave me a future I believed was medically impossible. You gave me love, courage, and our son. Will you do me the honor of becoming my wife?”

Yes, Mommy! The baby whispered within her, a final, radiant burst of joyful psychic laughter echoing through her heart. Say yes!

“Yes,” Ava wept, throwing her arms around his neck as Adrian caught her in a fierce, breathless embrace, lifting her up and kissing her with a passion that made the rest of the world fade into insignificance.
