Chapter 6 - The Broken Alibi

Adrian stared down at his hand resting against Ava’s abdomen, his pupils dilated with a whirlwind of disbelief, wonder, and terror. His fingers trembled against the soft wool of her sweater. For ten years, the top fertility specialists in the world had handed him thick manila folders containing the same grim diagnosis: zero viability, irreversible trauma, an absolute dead end for his bloodline. He had accepted a lonely life, channeling his wealth into hospitals and research facilities to save the children he could never father.

“How?” Adrian whispered, his voice thick with unspooled emotion. “The doctors told me... they swore it was impossible.”

“Medicine is not absolute, Adrian,” Ava said, her tears soaking his fingers as she held his hand tight against her. “Miracles happen in the margins of trauma. I didn't plan this. I was terrified you would think I was an opportunist trying to trap a billionaire.”

“Trap me?” Adrian’s voice cracked. He leaned forward, resting his forehead against hers, his breath warm and unsteady against her lips. “Ava, I have spent two months tearing this city apart trying to find you. I hired private investigators. I pulled hotel surveillance footage, but Henry had wiped the corridor cameras. I thought I had lost the only woman who ever looked at me as a man instead of Foster Health Holdings.”

Mommy, look at the door! The baby’s voice screamed with sudden, violent alarm. Danger!

Before Ava could react, the heavy oak nursery door exploded open. Two men in tactical black gear stormed into the room, their faces covered in dark balaclavas. One raised a pneumatic dart projector, firing a high-velocity sedative directly toward Adrian’s neck.

Adrian moved with lightning-fast instinct honed by years of combat training. He shoved Ava behind his broad frame, ducking beneath the trajectory of the projectile. The dart embedded itself deeply into the high wooden back of the nursery armchair with a sickening thud.

“Ava, stay behind me!” Adrian roared, lunging forward like a feral animal protecting its den.

He caught the first intruder by the throat, slamming him violently into the mahogany bookshelf, sending heavy medical volumes crashing across the carpet. But the second man bypassed Adrian entirely, drawing a silenced semi-automatic pistol and aiming it directly at the bassinets where the five infants were beginning to wail.

“Touch those babies and you die in this room!” Adrian yelled, wrenching the first assailant’s arm behind his back with a sharp snap of bone.

Shoot the chandelier switch, Mommy! The baby shouted inside Ava’s mind with piercing clarity. By the door! Break the circuit!

Ava didn't hesitate. She grabbed the heavy brass fire poker resting beside the nursery hearth and swung it with all her strength against the exposed master electrical control panel beside the entrance.

A blinding shower of blue sparks erupted into the darkness. The entire nursery plummeted into pitch-black obscurity, accompanied by the high-pitched screech of the estate’s secondary alarm sirens tripping throughout the corridors.

In the dark, Adrian was lethal. A muffled shout echoed through the room, followed by the wet crunch of a broken jaw and the heavy thud of a body collapsing against the floorboards. Ava stood frozen against the wall, clutching the fire poker to her chest, her breathing shallow and ragged.

A flashlight beam suddenly sliced through the darkness. Adrian stood over the two unconscious intruders, his knuckles split and bleeding, his eyes wild with fury.

“They didn't come from outside,” Adrian growled, pulling off the mask of the second man. It was one of the private security guards Beatrice had hired three years ago. “Beatrice orchestrated an extraction. She isn't in the carriage house anymore.”

The sirens wailed like mourning banshees across the dark estate. From the hallway below, the distinct sound of gunshots rattled through the stone foundation.

The man from the hotel is downstairs, her baby whispered, shivering with cold dread. Victor Dane is here for us, Mommy. He brought Henry.
