Chapter 7 - The Hostage in the Vault

Adrian grabbed Ava’s hand, pulling her out of the nursery into the dimly lit hallway just as Sophia emerged from her bedroom, clutching a heavy iron fireplace shovel with white-knuckled desperation. Her face was pale, but the maternal instinct burning in her eyes was ferocious.

“Sophia, get into the nursery,” Adrian ordered sharply. “Lock the blast door from the inside and do not open it for anyone except my voice. Use the encrypted terminal under my desk to call the State Police tactical unit directly.”

“Adrian, what is happening?” Sophia pleaded, looking at the smoke drifting up the grand staircase.

“A board-level coup,” Adrian replied coldly. “Beatrice sold our proprietary pharmaceutical patents to Victor Dane’s offshore syndicate to cover her gambling debts in Macau. Dane is here to wipe out the remaining heirs before the federal warrants drop at dawn.”

Sophia nodded once, her jaw hardening with Foster resolve. She stepped into the nursery, and the reinforced steel-core door slammed shut with a definitive electronic click of heavy deadbolts.

Adrian led Ava through a concealed service corridor lined with exposed brick and water pipes, descending rapidly into the estate’s historic foundation. “The wine cellars connect to an underground bunker built during the Cold War,” Adrian explained as they ran, his grip on her hand unyielding. “It has independent air filtration and biometric security. Once you’re inside, a tank couldn't break through.”

“I’m not hiding while you fight them alone!” Ava protested, her heart hammering against her ribs.

“You’re carrying my child, Ava!” Adrian snapped, stopping at the landing of the stone stairs and framing her face with his bloodied hands. His eyes were wide, filled with an agonizing terror he had never shown to any rival in the boardroom. “I have spent ten years believing my family line was cursed to die with me. You and this baby are my life now. If I lose you, there is nothing left of me to save.”

Mommy, behind the wine racks! The baby’s psychic voice screamed, sharp as broken glass. Duck!

Ava tackled Adrian to the cold stone floor just as a deafening burst of automatic gunfire tore through the wooden wine racks above their heads. Rare vintages shattered in an explosion of red liquid and glass, raining down like dark blood across the cobblestones.

Standing at the entrance of the vaulted cellar was Victor Dane, dressed in an immaculate charcoal wool overcoat, flanked by three armed mercenaries. Beside him stood Uncle Henry, his face disheveled, sweating profusely, smelling of cheap bourbon and raw panic.

“Well, well,” Victor purred, his cruel voice echoing against the stone arches. “The honorable Adrian Foster and my little runaway niece. Quite a cozy family reunion.”

“Henry,” Ava gasped, pushing herself up from the floor, her eyes blazing with disgust. “You brought them here? To kill innocent babies?”

“They’re going to kill me, Ava!” Henry whined, his voice high and pathetic. “I owe Victor three million dollars after the market crash! He said if I helped him secure the Foster family’s bearer bonds and patent keys, he’d wipe the slate clean! You were supposed to sleep with him and fix this months ago, you ungrateful little bitch!”

Adrian moved faster than thought. He stepped between Henry and Ava, his eyes burning with murderous intent. “You speak to the mother of my child again, Henry, and I will tear your throat out with my bare hands.”

Victor Dane let out a low, amused chuckle, raising a polished silver revolver. “A child? Really, Adrian? You’ve been shooting blanks for a decade. Did your little resident tell you that fairy tale to get her hands on your trust fund?”

Adrian smiled—a cold, terrifying baring of teeth. “Let’s test that theory, Dane.”

The barrel of the gun has no safety pin, Mommy! The baby whispered, revealing the fatal flaw in the mercenary's equipment. His right knee is weak from an old injury. Kick the pipe!

Ava looked to her left. A high-pressure steam valve for the estate’s historic radiator system ran directly alongside Victor’s flank. She didn't hesitate. With all her remaining strength, Ava snatched an iron spanner from the workbench and struck the brass release valve.
