Chapter 8 - The Weight of Scars

By three o'clock Sunday morning, the gala was a distant memory.
Derek, Victoria, and Marcus had been escorted out in handcuffs under the relentless glare of press cameras. The board had held an emergency midnight session in the club’s library, voting unanimously to strip Derek of all family trust assets and formally designating Adrian as the sole trustee for life.
Nonna Rosa, far from having a heart attack, had downed two glasses of vintage prosecco and ordered the orchestra to play until midnight in celebration of the traitors' downfall.
Now, inside the quiet sanctuary of the Sterling House presidential suite, the adrenaline had finally washed away, leaving an echoing emptiness behind.
Mara stood on the penthouse terrace, wrapped in Adrian’s heavy cashmere coat against the chilly November wind. The city lights sparkled below like fallen stars.
The glass door slid open, and Adrian stepped out, holding two mugs of steaming black tea. He handed one to Mara, his fingers brushing against hers, lingering with purposeful warmth.
“Nonna wants you to know,” Adrian said softly, leaning his tall frame against the stone balustrade beside her, “that Sunday family brunch is officially canceled. She said she’s taking a private jet to Miami for a spa week, and she strictly ordered me not to let you leave this city.”
Mara gave a faint, bittersweet smile, gazing down at the tea. “She’s an extraordinary woman.”
“She is,” Adrian agreed. Then his voice dropped, intense and raw. “Gus verified the transfer this morning. Seventy-five thousand dollars has cleared in your personal account. Dawson Talent has received a full corporate immunity release and a three-year exclusive event consulting contract with our hotel chain.”
Mara’s throat tightened. The mission was complete. Claire was saved. Her mother’s medical expenses were covered for years to come. The justice she had sought for her father’s legacy had been delivered on a public stage before the entire state elite.
Everything was settled.
So why did her heart feel like it was breaking into a thousand pieces?
“Thank you,” Mara whispered, keeping her eyes glued to the skyline to prevent the tears from falling. “You kept your word, Mr. Moretti.”
“Adrian,” he corrected gently, stepping closer. The distance between them vanished until she could feel the heat radiating from his chest. “My name is Adrian, Mara.”
“You hired a companion to play a role,” Mara said, her voice shaking despite her best efforts to maintain her composure. “The curtain is down. The play is over. Tomorrow morning, I have to go back to my storage-room office, balancing spreadsheets for bakeries and dentists.”
“Do you really think this was just a role to me?” Adrian reached out, his strong, calloused hand cupping her cheek, turning her face toward his. In the dim terrace light, his dark eyes were wide with a fierce, burning vulnerability. “I spent thirty-eight years surrounded by people who loved my money, feared my name, or plotted to steal my family’s bloodline. You walked into this room wearing sensible shoes, ready to fight me over ten thousand dollars because it was the right thing to do.”
He leaned down, his forehead resting gently against hers. Mara could feel his breath, ragged and warm against her lips.

“You saved my grandmother’s life,” Adrian whispered. “You saved my family. And you looked at me like a man, not an empire. Don’t you dare walk out of here thinking you can just be a line item in a ledger, Mara Bennett.”
Before Mara could breathe, Adrian closed the final inch between them, pressing his lips to hers in a deep, intoxicating, desperate kiss that shattered every wall she had spent seventeen years building around her heart.
