Chapter 6 - The Golden Trap

The Saturday evening gala at the Carolina Country Club was an exhibition of sheer Southern aristocratic wealth. Crystal chandeliers dripped from gilded ceilings, while a twenty-piece orchestra played vintage jazz for three hundred elite guests.
Mara walked into the ballroom on Adrian’s arm wearing a midnight-blue velvet gown, her chin held high. She could feel the stares—society matrons whispering behind champagne glasses, curious business rivals trying to decipher who the mysterious woman was beside the reclusive titan of Raleigh.
At the center of the ballroom, Nonna Rosa held court, glowing in lavender silk, greeting mayors, senators, and corporate executives.
“Look at them,” Derek whispered from the shadows near the terrace bar, his drink shaking in his grasp.
Beside him, Victoria looked pale, chewing her crimson lip. “Derek, Marcus told us she dismantled the Piedmont argument with one sentence last night. What if she found the server logs?”
“She’s a nobody!” Derek hissed under his breath. “A pathetic two-bit clerk from a bankrupt talent agency! I had our investigators pull her file this morning. Her father was Ray Bennett—the convicted embezzler! Do you understand what that means? We don’t need the board to vote Adrian out. We just need to publicly reveal that Adrian has entrusted the foundation’s books to the daughter of the most infamous financial fraudster in North Carolina history! Nonna will disown him on the spot!”
Across the ballroom, Adrian led Mara to Nonna Rosa’s throne-like lounge chair.
“Nonna,” Adrian greeted with genuine warmth, kissing both of his grandmother’s cheeks. “Happy eightieth birthday.”
“Adrian, my boy,” Rosa beamed, her eyes sparkling as she grabbed Mara’s hands with fierce affection. “And Mara! You came back! When Adrian told me he was bringing someone special this weekend, I expected another soulless clothes-hanger. But you… you have steel in your backbone, girl. I see how you look at him. And I see how he looks at you when he thinks no one is watching.”
Mara blushed, feeling Adrian’s fingers weave securely through hers. For a moment, the deception weighed heavily on her conscience. Rosa was so sincere, so desperately wishing for her grandson’s happiness.
Suddenly, the music stopped.
Derek stepped onto the band’s platform, tapping a microphone with a silver spoon. The sharp feedback silenced the entire ballroom.
“Ladies and gentlemen, distinguished guests,” Derek announced, a malicious, victorious grin plastered across his face. “Before we cut the birthday cake for our beloved matriarch, I have a grave announcement regarding the sanctity of our family legacy.”
Adrian’s grip on Mara’s hand tightened to iron.

“For months, my cousin Adrian has claimed to protect our grandmother’s foundation,” Derek projected across the grand hall, pointing an accusatory finger directly at Mara. “Yet tonight, he brings into our inner circle a known con-artist’s daughter! Ladies and gentlemen, the woman standing beside him is Mara Bennett. Her father died in a federal prison cell for stealing millions from hard-working citizens. And as we speak, Marcus Vance has uncovered that fifteen million dollars was transferred from our charity accounts—routed directly toward firms associated with Miss Bennett’s private ledger!”
Gasps rippled through the three hundred guests. Cameras began flashing violently. Nonna Rosa’s hand flew to her chest, her breathing turning ragged.
