Chapter 7 - The Master Stroke

The ballroom descended into an uproar. Victoria smirked from the VIP table, while Marcus Vance stood beside Derek, holding aloft a manila folder containing the forged Cayman Island wire documents.

“Adrian!” Derek roared through the microphone. “Step down from the chairmanship tonight, or the police waiting outside this ballroom will arrest you and your fraudster accomplice for grand larceny!”

Nonna Rosa swayed, clutching her throat. “Adrian… what is he saying? Is this true?”

“No, Nonna,” Adrian said, his voice ringing with thunderous authority that cut through the room’s panic like a battle cry. “It is not.”

Mara didn’t wait for Adrian to defend her. She stepped forward, letting go of Adrian’s hand, walking deliberately toward the stage with the predatory grace of a woman who had spent seventeen years preparing for this exact ambush.

“Mr. Vance,” Mara’s voice was calm, clear, and carried across the silent room without a microphone. “You claim those wire transfers were authorized by Adrian Moretti for my benefit?”

“The digital footprints don’t lie, Miss Bennett!” Marcus sneered, waving the paperwork. “The funds were diverted using the administrative credentials from the penthouse!”

“You’re right, digital footprints don’t lie,” Mara smiled coldly, pulling a slim USB drive from her evening clutch. She turned toward the audiovisual technician booth near the stage. “Gus! Play the feed.”

Gus, who had slipped unnoticed into the sound booth ten minutes earlier, inserted the drive into the master projector console.

Instantly, the massive two-hundred-inch display screens behind the stage flickered to life. Instead of Derek’s prepared slide presentation, crisp, high-definition 4K security footage filled the screens.

The date stamped on the video was October 14th, 2:14 AM.

The footage showed Victoria Moretti entering the restricted subterranean server vault at the Sterling House Hotel using a stolen biometric override keycard. The video zoomed in with crystal clarity as Victoria plugged a cloned hard drive into the main terminal, followed by Derek entering the frame, chewing his fingernails nervously as he whispered into a burner phone.

Audio crackled through the club’s premium surround-sound speakers:

“Make sure the Cayman wire looks like Adrian’s signature,” Derek’s recorded voice echoed loudly across the ballroom. “The Macau loan syndicate is threatening to break my legs by Tuesday. Once Adrian takes the fall for the missing foundation millions, Nonna will sign the emergency liquidation over to me!”

The ballroom froze in absolute, horrified shock.

Victoria dropped her champagne glass; it shattered on the parquet floor, spraying crystal and alcohol across her silk gown. Derek’s face drained of every drop of blood, turning a ghostly, sickening gray.

“You… you hacked the internal server archives!” Derek stammered into the dead silence.

“No, Derek,” Mara said, stepping onto the stage and snatching the microphone directly from his limp hand. “You hired an incompetent hacker who didn't realize the Sterling House uses decentralized mirror backups. You framed my father’s memory, you stole from sick children supported by this foundation, and you tried to kill your own grandmother with the shock of a manufactured scandal.”

Mara turned toward the back of the ballroom, where the grand oak doors swung open.

Four uniformed Raleigh police detectives and two federal agents stepped into the room, handcuffs already gleaming in the chandelier light.

“Derek Moretti, Victoria Moretti, Marcus Vance,” the lead detective announced. “You are under arrest for corporate wire fraud, extortion, and criminal conspiracy.”
