Chapter 9 - The Return to the West

Forty-eight hours after the boardroom purge in Manhattan, the corporate restructuring of Ashford Global was completed with surgical precision.
Victoria Ashford had retreated to a remote family cottage in upstate New York, stripped of her board seat, her executive accounts, and her social standing, awaiting formal civil arbitration regarding the embezzled foundation funds.
Daniel didn't stay to celebrate on Wall Street. He boarded his private jet at dawn, flying directly back across the continent toward Seattle.
The afternoon sun was breaking through the Puget Sound mist when Daniel’s SUV pulled back down the cedar-lined driveway of the Bainbridge Island estate.
I stood on the wide wooden porch, wearing a thick wool cardigan and jeans, holding a cup of hot cider while watching Lily and Grace chase seagulls across the rocky private beach below.
The gravel crunched beneath his tires as the SUV came to a stop.
Daniel stepped out of the vehicle, wearing comfortable corduroy trousers and a heavy sweater, his face looking tired but extraordinarily light.
He walked slowly down the stone steps toward the beach, stopping ten feet from the water where the girls were building a sandcastle with smooth sea stones.
When Lily saw him, she dropped her plastic shovel and pointed with a wide, joyful grin.
"Man! Look! Castle!" she shouted, running toward him on her chubby toddler legs.
Daniel didn't hesitate. He dropped to his knees right into the wet sand, catching Lily in his strong arms and lifting her high into the air as her delighted laughter rang across the water.
Grace waddled over immediately, clutching Daniel’s pant leg and looking up with wide, expectant eyes until he scooped her up into his other arm, holding both girls tightly against his chest.
He buried his face into their soft curls, his shoulders shaking with profound, overwhelming gratitude.
I walked down the beach path, stopping beside them on the wet gravel.
"Did you finish your business in New York, Daniel?" I asked quietly, the ocean wind lifting my hair across my face.
Daniel slowly set the girls back down on the sand, handing them each a smooth, rounded white stone from his pocket before rising to face me.
"Ashford Global is restructured, Elena," he said, pulling a blue leather folder from his coat and offering it to me.
I opened the folder. Inside were the finalized documents of the Ashford-Elena Heritage Trust, granting me sole voting control over forty percent of the company and appointing me Chairwoman of the Environmental and Architectural Foundation.

"You gave me the company?" I asked, looking up at him in genuine disbelief.
"I gave our daughters their future," Daniel answered softly, looking into my eyes with complete, unshielded devotion. "And I gave the woman I love the sovereignty she earned with every breath."
