Chapter 2 - The Two-Year Lie

Lily held up a broken green crayon and offered it across the table with an innocent grin. "Man take?"

Daniel looked down at the child’s tiny outstretched hand, tears welling up in the corners of his eyes before spilling onto his dark lapel. He gently accepted the crayon with two fingers, holding it like a sacred relic.

"Thank you, sweetheart," he murmured, his voice cracking with unbearable grief.

"Don't call her that," I said sharply. "You don't get to step into a coffee shop after twenty-six months and play the devoted father."

Daniel leaned across the table, his eyes wild with desperate urgency.

"Elena, I have spent the last fourteen months searching for you," he confessed, pulling an embossed leather notebook from his breast pocket. "I hired three private intelligence firms the day my father passed away."

"Your father died?" I asked, a brief flicker of sorrow passing through me. Richard Ashford had been cold, but he was never cruel like his wife.

"Ten months ago," Daniel nodded, wiping his wet cheek with the back of his hand. "Before he died, he called me into his hospital room. He told me that Victoria had fabricated the entire board confrontation."

I frowned, watching Grace lean her head against my arm as sleepiness began overtaking her.

"What do you mean, fabricated?"

"The board never voted to strip my succession rights if I stayed married to you," Daniel revealed, his jaw tightening with furious resentment. "Victoria bribed two of the trustees to stage that debate. She knew my father’s heart was failing, and she wanted me married to Charlotte Montgomery to consolidate the Montgomery rail holdings."

The magnitude of the deceit washed over the table like a cold wave.

"And you believed her?" I challenged, refusing to let him off the hook. "You sat there and let her orchestrate my exile because you were terrified of losing your money!"

"I was a coward, Elena!" Daniel pleaded, his voice rising enough that the barista glanced over again. "I thought I was saving us from being destitute! I thought once my father recovered, I could bring you back quietly!"

"You didn't bring me back," I said coldly. "You let me vanish into thin air. You didn't call. You didn't check."

"Victoria intercepted every phone call, every email, and told me you had relocated to Europe with someone else!" Daniel cried out, his hands gripping his hair in agony. "She showed me wire transfers and travel manifests that I now know were forged!"

He looked at the two little girls eating their afternoon snack, his heart breaking open right there on the café floor.

"I didn't know I had daughters," Daniel wept, his forehead touching the wooden table. "I didn't know I had two pieces of my own blood breathing in this world, and I left them in the cold."

"They were never in the cold, Daniel," I answered with quiet, unshakeable pride. "They had a mother who loved them more than an empire."
