Chapter 8 - The Appointment

Arthur turned to the ten board members seated around the oval table.
"Three weeks ago, the board approved an emergency authorization to appoint a Chief Operating Officer with full executive jurisdiction over all domestic facilities."
"We delayed the public announcement so Mr. Mercer could complete his initial audit of the Columbus campus without executive interference."
Arthur looked at Caleb, a proud, knowing grin spreading across his weathered face.
"Caleb, the floor is yours."
Caleb Mercer looked around the room, meeting the eyes of every director and vice president who had mocked his clothes and his education.

"Our first priority tomorrow morning is unfreezing the two custodial positions in the cafeteria," Caleb stated, his voice clear and resonant.
"Second, we are terminating thirty-two vendor contracts managed under Apex and initiating forensic recovery through the state attorney's office."
"Third, we are replacing the hydraulic lifts, repairing the warehouse dock levelers, and fixing the walk-in refrigeration units before Friday."
Nora Bennett raised her hand from the bottom of the table, a wide, genuine smile spreading across her face.

"I have the maintenance logs ready for reassignment, Mr. Mercer."
"Thank you, Nora," Caleb said, nodding toward her. "Starting Monday, you'll be heading the internal compliance review committee."
