Chapter 1 - The Paper Ghost

Blair Whitman’s manicured fingers tightened around the stem of her gold Parker pen.
Across the long walnut conference table, the overhead LED lights gleamed against the polished glass pitcher of water.
Victoria Harwood leaned back in her high-backed executive chair, her sharp green eyes narrowing at Caleb Mercer’s plain yellow legal pad.
"Apex Facility Logistics," Blair answered smoothly, forcing a dismissive smile back onto her face.
"They handle our facilities master contract. Batch reporting is an industry standard across midwest industrial complexes."
Caleb didn't blink or shift in his squeaking chair.
He didn't touch the white cleaning towel Blair’s assistant had placed mockingly on his leather blotter.
Instead, he turned another page of his worn notebook, his ballpoint pen resting beside three columns of neatly printed numbers.
"Apex Facility Logistics was incorporated twenty-two months ago in Delaware," Caleb said quietly.
His voice carried the steady, unhurried cadence of a machine shop foreman measuring a millimeter gap.
"They list a shared workspace on North High Street as their headquarters, with zero full-time service technicians on state payroll."
Victoria’s brow furrowed, her sharp gaze cutting from Caleb directly to Blair’s suddenly pale profile.
"Blair, you told the audit committee that Apex was an affiliate branch of Johnson Controls."
"They are an authorized third-party subcontractor," Blair stammered, her voice pitching up half an octave.
"We negotiated a fifteen percent volume discount on preventative maintenance across campus."
May you like
"The maintenance wasn't preventative, Blair," Caleb replied, looking straight into her eyes.
"Because according to the loading dock cameras, the technicians never arrived to turn a single wrench."
